THAILANDWHAT TO DOASIA

If you're wondering whether a Bangkok river dinner cruise is worth doing with kids, this review is for you.

We hadn't planned to do a dinner cruise at all. We were sitting outside the Royal Orchid Sheraton Bangkok, enjoying a cocktail overlooking the Chao Phraya River, when one of the illuminated dinner boats sailed past. Music was playing, the lights were flashing and Joshua, our 8 year old son, immediately asked, "What is that? I want to do that!"

That sent me down a rabbit hole researching the different Bangkok dinner cruises. Some were luxury experiences with live bands and premium dining, some were party boats, and others were much more budget friendly. Prices ranged from around £20 per person to over £50 per person, and cruise lengths, departure piers and inclusions varied significantly.

Quick Answer: Is a Bangkok River Dinner Cruise Worth It With Kids?

Yes – absolutely, but choose the right cruise.

We booked the Luxury White Dinner Cruise, departing from ICONSIAM, and paid around less than £20 per person, including drinks. It wasn't the most luxurious cruise on the river, nor was it trying to be. What it offered was excellent value, great views of Bangkok at night, plenty of food, a relaxed atmosphere and a manageable two-hour experience that started at a suitable time for children and worked really well for a family.

If you'd like to see the cruise we booked, I've included the tour link here. There are dozens of Bangkok dinner cruises to choose from, but this one struck a really good balance between value, views and family friendliness.

This guide covers:

  • What was included

  • The onboard entertainment

  • The Bangkok landmarks you'll see from the river

  • Cruise logistics

  • Whether it's worth the money

  • Whether I'd recommend it to other families

Why We Chose the White Orchid Dinner Cruise

The number of river cruises available in Bangkok is surprisingly overwhelming.

Some focus on fine dining, some are centred around live entertainment, while others are effectively floating party boats. When travelling with Joshua, we weren't looking for any of those things.

Instead, we had two simple criteria:

  • Depart from a pier convenient for our hotel

  • Offer good value for money

  • Ideally include some drinks for us adults

Because we were staying at the Royal Orchid Sheraton, right on the river opposite ICONSIAM, location mattered. The White Orchid cruise departed from ICONSIAM Pier, making the logistics incredibly simple.

The price also stood out. At around £19 per person, including dinner and soft drinks and beer, it was significantly cheaper than many of the alternatives we'd looked at. In fact, it was so inexpensive that I initially assumed there must be a catch. Fortunately, there wasn't, outside the entertainment being a bit cheesy.

What Was Included?

For the price, the inclusions were surprisingly generous.

The buffet offered a large selection of food, including:

  • Thai dishes

  • Seafood options

  • Salads

  • Pasta dishes

  • Rice and noodles

  • chips (yes french fries were available)

  • Western options such as chips

  • Desserts and cakes (including unlimited ice cream, win for the kids!)

  • Fresh fruit

Drinks included:

  • Soft drinks

  • Beer for adults

  • Tea and coffee

Additional alcoholic drinks could also be purchased separately.

For families, I thought the food selection worked particularly well. There was enough variety that even fussy eaters could find something familiar, which isn't always guaranteed on buffet-style excursions.

What Was the Entertainment Like?

This is probably where expectations matter. The cruise included a live singer and some light entertainment, but I wouldn't choose this cruise because of the performance.

The singer was perfectly adequate and did a good job of getting the crowd involved, but if you're looking for a premium show experience, a luxury dinner cruise or an evening built around entertainment, there are better options on the river.

For me, this cruise was never really about the food or the entertainment. It was about experiencing Bangkok from the water after dark. The music helped create some atmosphere but remained secondary to the views.

The Views: The Real Reason to Book

This was easily the highlight of the evening. As soon as darkness fell, Bangkok completely changed character. The buildings lit up, the temples became illuminated and the river itself seemed to come alive.

Along the route, we passed many of Bangkok's most famous landmarks, including:

  • Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn)

  • The Grand Palace area

  • ICONSIAM

  • Rama VIII Bridge

  • Large luxury riverside hotels

  • Traditional riverside communities

  • Countless illuminated temples and shrines

Wat Arun was probably the standout. Seeing the temple illuminated at night from the middle of the river was one of those views that photographs never quite capture properly.

It was also interesting seeing Bangkok from a completely different perspective. During the day we'd been navigating the city using river boats and ferries, but at night the river felt much calmer and more atmospheric.

For Joshua, simply being on the boat was part of the excitement.

Cruise Logistics: Easier Than Expected

One thing I appreciated was how straightforward the entire process was. The cruise departed from ICONSIAM Pier at 5pm and ran to 6.45pm. The instructions provided beforehand were clear and easy to follow.

After checking in, we were issued tickets and shown exactly where to queue for boarding. Once onboard, we were assigned a specific table, which removed the usual stress of trying to secure a good seat.

The cruise departed on time and lasted just under two hours, which I thought was ideal for families. It was long enough to enjoy the experience without reaching the point where children start getting restless.

One tip I'd give is to choose a cruise that departs from a pier close to your hotel if possible.

That was one of the reasons staying at the Royal Orchid Sheraton worked so well. Being able to walk or take a short shuttle transfer to the departure point made the evening feel completely hassle-free.

Why This Worked So Well With Kids

Not every evening activity translates well into family travel. We've all had those meals or attractions that looked great when booking but lost Joshua's interest within 20 minutes.

This was the complete opposite. What made the cruise work so well was that it wasn't really just a meal. It felt more like a sightseeing tour with dinner included. Every few minutes there was something new to see, whether that was another illuminated temple, a huge bridge, one of the luxury riverside hotels or another dinner cruise passing by with music and lights.

Joshua spent most of the evening moving between eating, looking out over the river and pointing out things he wanted to photograph. It held his attention far longer than a normal restaurant dinner would have done because the scenery was constantly changing.

The timing also helped. We deliberately chose the 5pm sailing rather than one of the later departure times. For families, I think this is definitely the better option. We boarded before everyone was tired, enjoyed the sunset over the river and still got to see Bangkok illuminate as darkness fell. By the time we returned, it was late enough to head back to the hotel but not so late that we'd completely disrupted bedtime.

Another advantage was that there was very little waiting around. Once onboard, food was available almost immediately, drinks were easy to access and there was always something happening. That balance of dining, sightseeing and light entertainment meant the two-hour cruise passed surprisingly quickly.

Looking back, I think that's why this ended up being one of our favourite Bangkok experiences. It combined several things families often try to fit into separate activities — a meal, a river tour and views of Bangkok's most famous landmarks — into one simple evening that felt fun rather than hard work.

For families wondering whether a Bangkok river dinner cruise with kids is worth it, I'd say it's one of the easiest evening activities we did during our entire Thailand trip.

If a Bangkok river dinner cruise sounds like something your family would enjoy, I've included the cruise link here to the exact tour we booked. This last minute decision ended up being one of the easiest and best-value evenings of our time in Bangkok.

Combine Your Cruise With a Visit to ICONSIAM

One thing that worked particularly well for us was combining the cruise with some time at ICONSIAM beforehand.

As the departure point for our cruise, it made sense to arrive a little early and have a look around. ICONSIAM is one of Bangkok's largest shopping and entertainment complexes, but even if shopping isn't your thing, it's worth visiting simply for the riverside setting to explore the light displays.

We spent some time exploring the lower floors, grabbing a drink and watching the river traffic before heading to the check-in desk. It made the evening feel more like an event rather than just a boat trip.

Final Verdict: Would We Recommend a Bangkok River Dinner Cruise With Kids?

100% yes. This was one of those activities we booked almost on a whim and ended up talking about long after the trip. Was it luxurious? No. Was it the best food we ate in Bangkok? Also no. But that's not really why you book a Bangkok river dinner cruise.

You book it for the atmosphere, the views and the chance to see a completely different side of Bangkok after dark. Watching the city light up from the water, sailing past illuminated temples and bridges while enjoying dinner, felt far more memorable than another evening in a restaurant.

What surprised me most was how well it worked as a family activity. The cruise wasn't too long, there was plenty of food for Joshua, and the constantly changing scenery kept him engaged throughout. Combined with the reasonable price, it ended up being one of the best-value experiences of our Bangkok stay.

Looking back, it's something I would happily do again and would have no hesitation recommending to other families visiting Bangkok.

If you're considering a Bangkok river dinner cruise, I've included the Luxury White Dinner Cruise link here. We chose it because of its value, family-friendly timing and convenient departure point from ICONSIAM, and it ended up being one of the best-value activities from our entire Thailand itinerary.

FAQs About Bangkok River Dinner Cruises With Kids

Is a Bangkok river dinner cruise worth it with kids?

Yes. We found it worked surprisingly well as a family activity because it combines sightseeing, dinner and entertainment into one experience. The constantly changing views of temples, bridges and the Bangkok skyline kept Joshua interested far longer than a traditional restaurant meal would have.

Which Bangkok river dinner cruise is best for families?

There are lots of options, but I'd focus on finding a cruise with an early departure, family-friendly buffet and a convenient departure pier. We chose the Luxury White Dinner Cruise from ICONSIAM because it offered excellent value and a relaxed atmosphere rather than a party-focused experience.

How long is a Bangkok river dinner cruise?

Most cruises last between 90 minutes and 2 hours. Our cruise lasted just under two hours, which felt about right with an 8-year-old. Long enough to enjoy the experience but not so long that children became restless.

What landmarks can you see on a Bangkok river cruise?

Most routes pass some of Bangkok's most famous riverside landmarks, including Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), the Grand Palace area, ICONSIAM, Rama VIII Bridge, luxury riverside hotels and numerous illuminated temples and shrines along the Chao Phraya River.

Should you choose an early or late dinner cruise with kids?

For most families, I'd recommend an early sailing if available. We chose a 5pm departure, which allowed us to enjoy the sunset and see Bangkok lit up after dark, while still getting back at a sensible time. It felt much more family-friendly than some of the later evening departures.
