RUKA, FINLAND
Comfort‑first, school‑age family travel — with real itineraries, real costs, and practical planning you can copy
WHY RUKA FOR FAMILIES
Ruka is a true winter wonderland and a brilliant choice for families starting their ski journey. With the largest beginner ski area in Finland, floodlit slopes, and a mix of cosy cabin accommodation or practical chalets, it combines confidence‑building skiing with unforgettable Arctic experiences.
We visited over Christmas with Crystal Ski, staying in Ruka Chalets. We met Santa, and loved winter activities like snowmobiling and reindeer rides — experiences that made the trip feel genuinely magical. It’s a place where skiing is only part of the adventure, and we enjoyed it so much that we’re already planning a DIY return trip in February 2027.

On the Ground in Ruka
From skiing and the Ruka Coaster to snowmobiling, reindeer rides and visiting Santa — here's what each experience is genuinely like with a school-age child.

pLANNING TIPS
Where to Book
We have booked Ruka with Crystal Ski. We’ve found Crystal good value, clear family‑friendly options, and — most importantly — we’ve only ever had positive experiences with their holidays.
When to Book
We usually aim to book our trips 9 - 12 months in advance. This gives the best availability. If booking with Crystal Ski my recommended destinations are popular especially during peak weeks. Be sure to look out various deals which are run regularly.
Budget for Ruka
We always start with a realistic budget for each ski trip and build the trip from there. Our trips range from £1,200 - £1,800 per person, Ruka varies depending on if you opt to go Christmas week, which is more expensive. In addition you need to budget for the additional activities. How to layer properly to stay warm on the slopes
What’s worth buying vs hiring at resort
