PASSO TONALE, ITALY
Comfort‑first, school‑age family travel — with real itineraries, real costs, and practical planning you can copy
WHY passo tonale FOR FAMILIES
Passo Tonale is a calm, family‑friendly resort that’s ideal for beginners. Set high on a mountain pass between Trentino and Lombardy, it offers quiet slopes, fast lifts, and reliable snow, with gentle runs including an easy blue on the Presena glacier.
We visited during February half term with Crystal Ski, staying at the Grand Hotel Paradiso, a ski‑in/ski‑out catered hotel that was well set up for families. This was also where Joshua tried snowboard lessons for the first time, and the relaxed slopes were perfect for building confidence. The compact town layout, family‑focused facilities (including Crystal Childcare), and classic Italian food make Passo Tonale a strong first ski trip. We cover what worked well and what was trickier in our full guide.

pLANNING TIPS
Where to Book
This Passo Tonale trip was booked with Crystal Ski. We’ve found them to offer good value, clear family‑friendly options, and — most importantly — we’ve only ever had positive experiences with their holidays.
When to Book
We usually aim to book our trips 9 - 12 months in advance. This gives the best availability. If booking with Crystal Ski my recommended destinations are popular and there are limited childcare and ski school places. Be sure to look out various deals which are run regularly.
Budget for Passo Tonale
We always start with a realistic budget for each ski trip and build the trip from there. Our trips range from £1,200 - £1,800 per person, Passo Tonale is typically on the more expensive side as it is catered accommodation. For Passo Tonale budgeting start here,
What to pack for a ski trip?
Ski trips have taught us a lot about what actually keeps families warm — and what ends up untouched at the bottom of the suitcase. The key is layering properly, investing in good gloves and socks, and knowing where you can simplify.
We share ski‑specific packing tips across our destination pages, covering:
How to layer properly to stay warm on the slopes
What’s worth buying vs hiring at resort
Small extras that make a big difference in cold conditions
And what you can confidently leave at home
These lists are based on real family ski trips from someone who REALLY feels the cold, they are designed to help you pack warmer, lighter, and with far less stress — especially if you’re heading on your first ski holiday with kids. A good place to start is with here.
