Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe is the newest theme park in Florida — the first major new park there in over 25 years. It expands Universal’s offerings with five immersive themed worlds, cutting‑edge attractions, character experiences, themed food and merchandise, and plenty of walking and excitement for kids and adults alike.

We visited Epic Universe in April 2026 with our 8, 9, and 10-year-olds as part of our 14-day Universal park ticket. Here’s our firsthand overview of the park and what our family experience was like.

Exploring the Different Worlds

Epic Universe’s layout is built around a central hub (Celestial Park) with themed lands branching off — each with its own look, story, rides, and food:

  • Celestial Park – A mythological, garden‑like hub with rides like Stardust Racers and a constellation carousel. It’s a good introduction that isn’t tied to any specific franchise.

  • Super Nintendo World – One of the park’s most kid‑friendly areas. Characters like Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach are featured, along with interactive rides like Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge and Mine‑Cart Madness. Interactive Power‑Up Bands (sold separately for $45 a pop) let children punch question blocks, collect coins, and unlock extra challenges, turning the land into a real‑world video game experience.

  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic – A new version of Wizarding World set in 1920s Paris, with the headline ride Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry and interactive wand experiences for spell casting.

  • How to Train Your Dragon: Isle of Berk – A Viking‑themed world with rides such as Hiccup’s Wing Gliders and interactive experiences, plus dragon‑themed shops and play areas.

  • Dark Universe – A spooky, monster‑centric land featuring rides like Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment and interactive character experiences.

These varied lands mean there’s something for different interests — from video‑game play in Super Nintendo World to magic in Wizarding World and dragons in Isle of Berk — which helps keep school‑aged kids engaged.

Rides & Height Restrictions (Family Focus)

Epic Universe offers rides suitable for a range of ages, but height restrictions still apply and vary by ride:

  • At Super Nintendo World, Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge has a moderate height requirement around 40″ (102 cm), while Mine‑Cart Madness has a lower requirement (~36″ / 91 cm), making it more accessible for younger kids. Yoshi’s Adventure, a gentler ride, is even more accessible (~34″).

  • Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry generally has a 40″ (102 cm) minimum, appropriate for most school‑aged children.

  • The Viking and Dark Universe areas have a mix of family‑friendly and more intense rides; check individual attraction height requirements on the official app or website as they can differ.

Plan around these requirements so you know which kids in your group can ride what — a key planning insight for families with a mix of ages.

Food, Drinks and Themed Menus

Food at Epic Universe is a major part of the experience, with themed dining across the park:

  • In Super Nintendo World, Toadstool Cafe serves American classics with Mushroom Kingdom theming, while Yoshi’s Snack Land offers lighter treats.

  • Throughout the park, expect themed snacks, ice creams, novelty drinks, and menu tie‑ins to match each land’s style. These range from casual grab‑and‑go to sit‑down experiences.

  • Like most theme parks, food and drinks are expensive — think themed items and souvenirs adding up quickly, so budget accordingly. As an example we paid $9.50 (around £7) for one ice cream cone.

  • Free water fountains were available throughout the park

Characters, Shops and Interactive Elements

Epic Universe is built to be immersive:

  • You’ll find character meet‑and‑greets including Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach in Super Nintendo World, and roaming characters like Toothless in the How to Train Your Dragon area.

  • Themed shops are a big draw, with items like interactive wands, Power‑Up Bands, and franchise merch that enhance the experience and provide great souvenirs.

  • Many kids enjoy these interactive purchases — but again, they add to daily costs.

Practical Family Planning

Is parking close to the park?

Parking is available on‑site, it is less than a 10 minute walk to the park from the parking area. If you’re staying at nearby hotels, many offer complimentary shuttle transport directly to the park entrance.

Can families bring their own lunch?

Guests are welcome to bring their own lunch and cold drinks into the park in a soft cooler bag (no hard coolers). There are not designated picnic areas, but plenty of benches can be found across the park. Free lockers are available when using rides, these are face activated and larger than those at Universal Studios and Island of Adventure, you can fit a back pack without having to squash it down. Free water fountains are available across the park so no need to bring lots water or heavy bottles.

Is there a lot of walking and waiting?

Yes, there’s a lot of walking and waiting involved at Epic Universe. Because the park is large and each land is spread out, daily step counts easily climb — plan comfortable shoes and rest breaks.

Does the Universal Unlimited Express Pass work at Epic Universe?

No — the standard Universal Express Passes, including hotel-issued fast passes, does not currently work at Epic Universe. The park does offer Epic express passes booked direct for this park only, they come with a hefty price tag of £200 - 270+ per person, this is an additional cost to your park entry ticket.

Does Epic Universe provide disability access for guests?

Yes, Epic Universe offers Attraction Queue Accommodations for guests with disabilities. You can register up to 5 people in your party through Universal ahead of your visit. Once registered, use the app to select an attraction and get a return time based on the current queue. At the ride, show your code to the attendant at the express line. While there is still some waiting, it’s significantly shorter than the standard queue. This system isn’t as fast as the Express Pass, but it helps families with younger or less mobile guests enjoy the park without long waits.

Do kids prefer Epic to the main Universal Parks?

Completely depends on your family. For our kids (aged 8–10), Islands of Adventure was still their favourite, thanks to the bigger, longer roller coasters like VelociCoaster. Epic Universe is newer, highly themed, and immersive, but for thrill-seeking school-aged kids, Islands of Adventure edges it slightly.

How many days should we spend at Epic Universe with kids?

Most families can enjoy the highlights in one full day, but with no express pass you will struggle to get on all the rides. If you are more focused on rides verses the interactive experience, a second day would allow you to experience the majority of the park without being too rushed. We found our kids were comfortable with one day, the experience can be so exhausting by late afternoon they just wanted to come home and jump in the pool!

Is Epic Universe Worth Visiting with School‑Aged Kids?

Short answer: Yes, for many families. Epic Universe offers a breadth of immersive attractions and interactive experiences that cater to school‑aged kids, from Nintendo characters to dragons, spells, and thrill rides. Its variety keeps energy high and offers more than a standard theme park day — provided you plan around walking, queues, ride restrictions, and costs.

Best for families who:

  • Love themed lands and storytelling experiences

  • Have school‑aged children who can ride major attractions

  • Want a mix of interactive and thrill experiences

Considerations before you go:

  • It’s a lot of walking and some waiting — plan breaks and expect slower crowds in peak times.

  • Food, merchandise, and extras (like Power‑Up Bands) add expenses.

  • No express pass access

Epic Universe is quickly shaping up to be one of the most immersive theme park experiences in Florida, rivaling classics like Magic Kingdom and Islands of Adventure by blending deep theming with family‑friendly rides and big‑name franchises — making it a worthy stop on most family Orlando itineraries.
