Why We Booked a Segway Tour in Malaga

We wanted a way to explore Malaga that would be fun for Joshua without involving hours of walking.

First Impressions and Safety Briefing

The safety briefing was much more thorough than I expected. Nobody was allowed to head off immediately.

Instead, we started in a quiet area where everyone had to demonstrate they could:

Helmets were mandatory for everyone. The guide spent extra time with Joshua to ensure he was comfortable before setting off. At no point did we feel rushed or pressured.

What reassured me most was that the guide clearly wasn't interested in getting people moving as quickly as possible. He genuinely wanted to make sure everyone could safely control their Segway first.

The guide was excellent throughout and immediately put both Joshua and us at ease. By the time we left the practice area, we felt completely comfortable with Joshua taking part.

How Easy Was It for a 8-Year-Old?

Much easier than I expected. In fact, Joshua probably picked it up faster than I did.

Within a few minutes, he had mastered:

Children seem to have an advantage because they're naturally less nervous. While I was carefully thinking about every movement, Joshua simply stepped on and got on with it.

Where the Tour Went

One of the things we liked most about the tour was that it covered some of Malaga's biggest highlights without requiring us to tackle the hills on foot. Alcazaba

Early in the tour, we passed the Alcazaba, one of Malaga's most iconic landmarks.

This Moorish fortress dates back to the 11th century and is one of the best-preserved of its kind in Spain. While we didn't go inside during the tour, our guide shared plenty of interesting history as we rode past, which helped bring the area to life and gave Joshua some context about the city's past.

Plaza de la Merced

We also rode through Plaza de la Merced, one of Malaga's most popular and lively squares.

Famous as the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, the square is surrounded by cafes, restaurants and historic buildings. Gliding through on the Segways gave us a real feel for the atmosphere of the city and was a great way to experience one of Malaga's central meeting points.

Castillo de Gibralfaro

For us, the ride up towards Castillo de Gibralfaro was the highlight of the entire tour.

Reaching this area on foot would have involved a fairly steep uphill walk, so being able to glide up on the Segway felt like a real treat. As we climbed, the views gradually opened up until we were rewarded with spectacular panoramic views across Malaga, the port, the bullring and the coastline beyond.

We stopped here for photographs and to take in the scenery, and it was easily one of the most memorable moments of the day. Joshua loved spotting landmarks from above, while we simply enjoyed the view.

Honestly, the views from Gibralfaro alone made the tour worthwhile, and combining them with the ride up made the experience feel even more special.

Did It Feel Safe in Malaga?

Yes.

This was probably my biggest concern before booking, but it quickly disappeared. Although there were some pedestrians and traffic near the start, the guide managed the group extremely well.

Whenever we approached busier sections, he became more hands-on with Joshua, occasionally taking control of the Segway handle to guide him safely through crowded areas.

The pace was never rushed. The tour was designed around the ability of the slowest rider rather than the fastest. That made it feel very family-friendly.

What Our Child Thought

Joshua's main challenge during the tour wasn't fear. It was frustration at not being allowed to go faster.

From the very first few minutes in the training area, he was confident on the Segway and never once appeared nervous. If anything, he adapted far quicker than either of us and was soon gliding around as though he'd been doing it for years.

His favourite part was undoubtedly trying to build up speed on the quieter, more open sections of the route. Given half a chance, I think he would have happily raced ahead of the group.

Fortunately for us, the Segway's built-in speed restrictions prevented him from fully indulging that ambition, which gave us a lot more peace of mind than it gave him satisfaction.
