When planning a family ski holiday, choosing the right ski school is often the biggest make-or-break factor. It affects confidence, safety, daily structure and whether children actually enjoy the week. We’ve been to La Thuile several times with our son Joshua, booking both independently and through Crystal Ski, and we’ve seen how the ski school experience works in real peak-season conditions. From complete beginners to confident improvers, La Thuile Ski School is consistently well organised and genuinely strong for families — especially when paired with Crystal’s childcare and lesson logistics, which can make mornings much smoother for parents.

Who Is La Thuile Ski School For?

Honestly, everyone. Whether your child is just starting out, looking to refine their technique, or aspiring to compete, La Thuile Ski School has options. Many instructors also coach with the La Thuile Rutor Ski Club, which runs competitive skiing courses for children and teenagers of all ages. For our family, this flexibility was perfect. Joshua, along with his cousins, went from green to red group in a few visits, showing just how well the instructors tailor lessons to ability. The lessons started at the bottom of the mountain by the gondola and ended at the top of the mountain at the top of the gondola. The Crystal Ski team would be there to meet the kids and take them to lunch after their lessons, parents not using the club needed to pick their kids up from the top of the mountain. Any late parents would find their kids inside the ski school sat waiting patiently!

Organisation and Safety

From the moment we arrived, it was clear that La Thuile Ski School runs like clockwork. Lessons start at 9am and last three hours, giving the kids plenty of time to develop their skills on the slopes. The instructors are highly professional, all fully certified, and range from world-class athletes to national coaches across different skiing disciplines. One thing we really appreciated was the child-to-instructor ratio. There were plenty of instructors for each group, and if the weather turned bad, they would add extra instructors to maintain safety. For parents, this was reassuring — especially for beginners like Joshua in his early years of skiing.

What to Expect for Kids

Lessons are structured, professional, and importantly, fun — though they don’t function as a childcare service. Kids need to manage basic needs like using the toilet themselves; if not, the instructor may call a parent or, if your child is in the Crystal Ski Beanie Club, the club team maybe called to assist. The instructors are also very disciplined — Joshua learned quickly that messing around isn’t an option. This approach is essential on the mountain, keeping everyone safe while still ensuring a positive learning environment. We also found that all the instructors spoke excellent English, which made communication easy and reassuring, especially for first-time skiers or younger children.

Extra Perks

One of our favourite touches is that at the end of the week, the instructors often take the kids out for a hot chocolate. Make sure your children have a little cash for this treat — it’s a lovely way to wrap up the week of skiing and gives them something to look forward to.

Another nice touch is that La Thuile Ski School provides a photo of your child during the lessons and an achievement badge — the photo is usually a group shot included in the package, with the option to purchase additional individual photos if you like. It’s a lovely keepsake of the week and lets you see exactly what they were up to.

Lessons for All Ages

La Thuile Ski School caters to a wide age range. Joshua started his lessons at 5 years old and quickly progressed, while his cousins aged 7-8 also advanced their skills. The school is perfect for families wanting a mix of child-friendly learning, progression, and safety without the chaos of crowded resorts.

Bottom Line

We highly recommend La Thuile Ski School for families with children. The combination of certified, professional instructors, excellent organisation, small groups, and a safe learning environment made all the difference to our ski holiday. Joshua came away confident, happy, and eager to keep improving.
