If your family is planning a trip to the Florida Keys, you might be wondering whether a snorkelling tour is worth it with kids. From our experience, it absolutely is—especially for school-aged children who love animals and the ocean. Key Largo is home to the only living tropical coral reef in the United States, and a half-day snorkelling tour gives kids a chance to explore it safely while spotting turtles, tropical fish, and even dolphins if you’re lucky.

What is a snorkelling tour in Key Largo like?

Snorkelling in Key Largo is unforgettable. The water is crystal-clear, and the coral formations are vibrant and full of life. On our trip, our son was mesmerised by the schools of tropical fish and the occasional turtle bobbing on the surface. Even if your kids haven’t snorkelled before, the tours are beginner-friendly—and for families who have snorkelled before, the reef is exciting enough to keep everyone engaged.

These tours take you to protected reef locations within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. You’re essentially exploring part of the third-largest living coral reef system in the world, giving kids a chance to see a real underwater ecosystem up close. On our trip, we were lucky enough to spot sea turtles and plenty of tropical fish.

What’s Included on a Snorkelling Tour

Most half-day tours include everything you need for a family-friendly adventure:

  • Boat tour with sun deck access

  • Snorkelling equipment

  • Reef-safe sunscreen

  • Guided instruction

  • Water cooler with cups

  • Soft drinks for the kids, fresh fruit, and cookies

Bring your own towel and any additional snacks or drinks you may want. Having all the equipment provided makes it much easier when travelling with kids, and reef-safe sunscreen is essential to protect Florida’s delicate coral systems.

Tour Logistics & Cost

We booked our tour through Viator, operated by a local provider, the tour cost just under £55 per person at time of booking. There were two daily slots, 8:30 a.m. and later in the afternoon. We chose the morning tour, arriving an hour early to sign waivers, get our gear, and make our way down to the boat. This extra time was useful—we even managed a quick coffee beforehand.

Parking was free on site. The tour included two stops: one tropical reef location and one more reef-focused stop where you could snorkel among the fish. If you’re hoping to see the famous underwater Christ of the Abyss statue, note that not all tours go there—conditions and weather can affect accessibility.

Who Can Join?

  • Suitable for school-aged kids

  • Beginners and experienced snorkelers welcome

  • Boat riders can relax, enjoy the sun deck, or watch the snorkelers

Not suitable for babies under 1 year. Full-face snorkel masks aren’t permitted, so we had to use the standard snorkel masks provided by the tour operator.

Tips for Families Visiting

From our experience, these tips make the tour more enjoyable:

  • Take a travel sickness pill if you’re sensitive to motion

  • Arrive an hour early to allow time for preparation

  • Bring a towel and extra snacks or drinks

  • Morning tours are generally calmer and cooler

  • Encourage kids to stay calm and enjoy the water—the guides are attentive and safety-focused

Pairing the snorkelling tour with a stop at nearby Florida Keys family beaches or staying at family-friendly accommodation like where we stayed at Kawama Yacht Club Key Largo: Beachfront Family Accommodation makes for a full, relaxed day that balances adventure with downtime.

Our Experience

Joshua enjoyed the boat ride the most. When he got into the water to snorkel, he struggled at first with water entering his mask, needing a bit of encouragement, but soon came around. We spent roughly an hour at each location, with about half the time actually snorkelling before returning to the boat.

The boat rocked back and forth slightly. We had taken travel sickness pills, and while Joshua was fine, Mark felt a bit unsteady, though not sick. Overall, the experience was fun and memorable, though we were slightly disappointed not to visit the Christ statue site.

In total, we arrived at 7:30 a.m., were on the boat by 8:30 a.m., and back at the port by 12 p.m.—a manageable half-day adventure with kids.

Is a Snorkelling Tour Worth It with Kids?

Yes! Many kids love seeing marine life up close, and it’s a fantastic way to break up theme park or road trip days. The combination of swimming, wildlife spotting, and the boat ride is exciting and memorable. For school-aged children, it’s one of the most hands-on ways to experience the Florida Keys and its underwater world. If you are interested in the exact tour we booked and recommend, you can find it on Viator, there are plenty of tours available we reviewed ahead of booking, such as those on Get Your Guide.

If your kids enjoyed adventures like our Everglades Airboat Tour, they’ll likely love snorkelling—it’s slower-paced, safer, and just as engaging.

Final Verdict

In our experience, snorkelling tours in the Florida Keys are absolutely worth it, providing a safe, exciting, and educational experience that kids still talk about weeks later.
