Tenerife or Spain Costa del Sol for October half term? We've done both with kids. Honest comparison of weather, pools, day trips and which delivered the better family holiday.

We've done October half term in both Tenerife and Costa del Sol Spain, and the difference genuinely surprised us.

One trip we spent wearing shorts by the pool. The other we were in jeans carrying umbrellas, with a cancelled day trip and an unheated pool nobody wanted to go near.

This guide compares Tenerife vs Costa del Sol in Spain for October half term with kids, covering weather, pool usability, day trips, costs and which one we'd book again. It's written for families deciding where to spend that tricky autumn week when you want sunshine but can't guarantee it.

Quick Answer: Is Tenerife or Spain Better for October Half Term?

Tenerife, if your priority is reliable warmth, pool time and a proper sunshine holiday.

Mainland Spain, if you want day trips, sightseeing and adventure, and you're relaxed about the weather.

Here's the honest version: Tenerife sits off the coast of Africa and holds its summer-like warmth well into autumn. Mainland Spain, including the Costa del Sol, starts cooling noticeably in October and the weather becomes genuinely unpredictable.

We had glorious warm days in Tenerife in October. On the Costa del Sol the same month, we had a mixed week that turned wet and cold in the second half.

If someone told me they wanted guaranteed swimming weather for half term, I'd send them to Tenerife without hesitation. If they wanted some of the best day trips I've experienced in Europe like Caminito del Rey, Benehavis, Gibraltar and Ronda, mainland Spain wins easily.

What's the Weather Really Like in October?

This is the deciding factor for most families, so let's be specific.

Tenerife in October

Tenerife stays reliably warm. We were in shorts and t-shirts throughout the day, with daytime temperatures typically in the mid-to-high 20s°C in the south around Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos.

Evenings cool down noticeably, so you'll want a hoodie or light jacket, but the days genuinely feel like a summer holiday.

The south of the island is warmer and drier than the north, which is why most families base themselves there.

Mainland Spain in October

The Costa del Sol averages around 24°C in October with decent sunshine hours, which sounds ideal on paper.

Our reality was different. The first half of our week was lovely and warm. The second half turned wet and cold, and it changed the entire shape of the holiday.

That unpredictability is the key difference. Mainland Spain can be glorious in October. It just isn't guaranteed.

Can You Actually Swim in October?

This is where the two destinations really diverge.

Swimming in Tenerife

Yes, comfortably. The pools were usable throughout our stay, and Joshua swam every day without complaint. Sea temperatures hover around 22-23°C, which is warm enough for most families.

The one caveat is that not all hotel pools are heated. Even in Tenerife, an unheated pool can feel cool first thing. It's worth checking before booking.

Swimming in Mainland Spain

Honestly? It's a gamble.

During the warmer first half of our Costa del Sol week, the pools were just about usable if you were feeling brave. Once the weather turned, they were too cold to enjoy at all.

Worse, our hotel's water park closed for the season during our stay, which was a significant disappointment given it was one of the reasons we'd booked.

This is the single biggest practical difference. In Tenerife, pool days work. On the mainland in October, they might not.

Which Has Better Day Trips and Activities?

Mainland Spain, and it isn't close.

Costa del Sol Spain Day Trips

The Costa del Sol is exceptional for family adventures. Within a two-hour drive you've got:

  • Caminito del Rey, the spectacular cliffside boardwalk through a gorge

  • Gibraltar, with the monkeys, caves and cannons

  • Ronda, with its dramatic gorge and historic water mine

  • Guadalmina River canyoning in Benahavís

  • Malaga city, including Segway tours

These were genuinely the best parts of our October trip. When the pool wasn't an option, the day trips were the best part of the holiday. For the full run-down, see The Best Family Day Trips From Malaga: Gorges, Canyons, Castles and More.

Costa del Sol also has a big water park, Aqualand, but this is not open in October.

Tenerife Day Trips

Tenerife has excellent attractions too, but they're more resort-focused:

  • Siam Park, regularly voted one of the world's best water parks

  • Loro Parque, a brilliant animal and conservation park

  • Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak

  • Whale and dolphin watching

  • Kayaking and snorkelling

  • Family go karting

Siam park was definitely the highlight, with the warmer weather we didn't have the same challenge with the waterparks closing for the season. See The Best Things to Do in Tenerife With Kids.

One Important October Caveat

Weather can cancel day trips.

Our Caminito del Rey booking was cancelled due to rain, and frustratingly, had we booked a few days earlier we'd have missed it entirely. It's an exposed outdoor walkway, so closures happen.

If you're booking activities on the mainland in October, look for free cancellation and build in flexibility.

Fortunately we made it there in Summer when the weather was less changeable. Canyoning may also not be suitable for all ages in October.

Which Is Better for Hotels?

This depends entirely on what you want from your accommodation.

Tenerife Hotels in October

Tenerife's all-inclusive resorts work well in October because the facilities remain genuinely usable. Pools are warm enough, outdoor areas are pleasant and the weather supports the resort lifestyle.

We stayed at Bahia Principe Fantasia, which had excellent family rooms, a brilliant splash park and a strong entertainment programme.

It delivered exactly what we wanted. See Hotel Bahia Principe Fantasia Tenerife Review With Kids.

For where to base yourself, see Where to Stay in Tenerife With Kids.

Costa del Sol Spain Hotels in October

This is where we made a mistake.

We booked all-inclusive at both Holiday World Polynesia and Hotel Riu Costa del Sol, and in both cases the seasonal limitations hit hard. Unheated pools, closed water facilities and themed restaurants that only operate in high season.

If I were booking mainland Spain for October again, I'd choose self-catered accommodation with a heated pool and use it as a base for day trips. That would suit the trip style far better.

Which Is Cheaper for October Half Term?

Mainland Spain, generally.

Flights to Malaga are typically cheaper than to Tenerife, and there's more competition on routes. Accommodation on the Costa del Sol also drops significantly in October, sometimes to a third of summer prices.

Tenerife holds its value better precisely because the weather stays good, so October isn't really shoulder season there in the same way.

That said, the maths isn't straightforward. If you book mainland Spain and can't use the pool, you've saved money on a holiday you're enjoying less.

For real figures from our trips, see How Much Does a Costa del Sol Family Holiday Cost? Our Real Spending Breakdown.

How Do the Flight Times Compare?

Both are manageable, but Tenerife is further.

Malaga is roughly 2.5 to 3 hours from most UK airports.

Tenerife is around 4 to 4.5 hours.

With younger children, that 90-minute difference matters more than you'd think. With school-age kids who'll happily sit with a tablet, it's less of an issue.

Malaga also wins on choice, with more routes and more airlines flying there.

Which Suits Different Types of Families?

Choose Tenerife If...

  • You want reliable warmth and guaranteed pool time

  • You're booking all-inclusive and want to actually use the facilities

  • You have younger children who need pool and beach days

  • You'd rather relax than drive to day trips

  • Siam Park is high on your list

  • You want the closest thing to a summer holiday in October

Choose Mainland Spain If...

  • You want day trips, sightseeing and adventure

  • You're happy to self-cater and explore

  • You have older children who'll enjoy Caminito del Rey or canyoning

  • You want shorter flights

  • Budget is a priority

  • You're relaxed about mixed weather

What Would We Do Differently?

Two honest lessons from our October trips.

In mainland Spain, we wouldn't book all-inclusive again. We paid for pools and water facilities we couldn't use. Self-catering with a heated pool, used as a base for day trips, would have suited us far better.

We'd always have a wet-weather backup plan. Our cancelled Caminito del Rey booking left us scrambling. Knowing what you'd do instead saves the day.

In Tenerife, honestly, we wouldn't change much. The weather did the heavy lifting.

Final Verdict: Tenerife or Spain for October Half Term?

For a classic sunshine holiday with reliable pool weather, Tenerife wins. If you're picturing shorts, swimming and warm evenings, that's what you'll get.

For adventure, day trips and better value, mainland Spain wins. The Costa del Sol offers some of the best family day trips we've done anywhere, and October's cooler temperatures actually make walking Caminito del Rey or exploring Ronda far more pleasant than summer heat would.

Our honest recommendation? Match the destination to the holiday you want, not the other way round.

If you're booking mainland Spain, go in expecting an activity-led trip rather than a beach holiday, choose accommodation that works if it rains, and book flexible tickets for outdoor attractions.

If you want to switch off by a pool without checking the forecast every morning, book Tenerife.

We'd happily return to both. We'd just plan each one very differently.

FAQs: Spain vs Tenerife in October

Is Tenerife Warmer Than Mainland Spain in October?

Yes, noticeably. Tenerife's position off the African coast gives it a subtropical climate that holds summer-like warmth into autumn, while mainland Spain begins cooling from late September onwards.

Can You Sunbathe in Spain in October Half Term?

Sometimes. On warm, sunny days absolutely, but it's not guaranteed. We had a mix of both during our Costa del Sol week, with the second half turning wet and cold.

Which Is Better for Younger Children?

Tenerife, mainly because the reliable pool weather suits younger children who aren't ready for long day trips or lots of walking.

Which Is Better for Older Children?

Mainland Spain. Older kids get far more from Caminito del Rey, canyoning and Gibraltar than they do from another day at the pool.

Do You Need a Hire Car in Either?

It really depends what you want to get out and see. We found in mainland Spain, a car transforms the trip and makes the day trips far easier. In Tenerife, it's useful but less essential if you're resort-based. See Do You Need a Car in Malaga With Kids? and Driving in Tenerife With Kids: Easy Family Holiday or Unnecessary Stress?
