When planning a Florida trip with kids, Discovery Cove in Orlando is often at the top of the list. Our family first visited in 2014, before we had kids, and loved it so much that we returned in April 2026 with our extended family — including kids aged 8, 9, and 10 years, parents in their 40s, young adults, and grandparents.
From our experience, the age of the kids makes a big difference in how much they enjoy the day. Discovery Cove isn’t like a typical theme park. It’s a premium, all-inclusive resort focused on nature, animals, and water-based activities rather than rides.

What Is Discovery Cove?
Discovery Cove offers a full day of immersive experiences for families:
Snorkelling in the Grand Reef, surrounded by colorful tropical fish and gentle rays.
Floating along the lazy river, a perfect way to relax between activities.
Enjoying beaches and sand play, which our kids loved as much as the water.
Observing animals, including dolphins, flamingos, monkeys, birds, and otters.
Unlimited food and drinks — from slushies for the kids to beer and wine for adults. (Note: no ice cream, which caught our kids by surprise!)
Optional experiences, like the dolphin swim, Sea Venture helmet dive, or shark feeding, can be added on for an additional cost. During our visit in 2026, we split our group so some kids did the dolphin swim while others enjoyed the lazy river and beaches. This mix worked perfectly and kept everyone happy.
Discovery Cove Is Expensive, and Age Does Matter
Because Discovery Cove is premium-priced, it’s important to consider the ages of your children. The park is best enjoyed when kids are old enough to remember it and participate in activities. Younger children may enjoy splashing in the pools or building sandcastles, but they’ll miss out on the main experiences like the dolphin swim. On our 2026 trip, our 8, 9, and 10-year-olds had a blast — confident in the water and old enough to participate in most activities. Meanwhile, the adults could relax and enjoy the park’s calm atmosphere. Even the grandparents found spots to sit and watch the action while soaking in the surroundings.
Activities Included for All Ages
Even if your children don’t do the paid experiences, there’s plenty to enjoy:
Snorkelling in the Grand Reef (life jackets and snorkelling equipment provided) — we loved seeing our kids’ faces light up the first time they spotted a ray gliding past.
Lazy river — the kids floated for hours, and the adults took turns joining them.
Playing on the beaches — buckets and sandcastle fun kept them busy.
Animal viewing — dolphins, flamingos, monkeys, birds, and otters were fascinating for all ages and can be seen easily without paying for additional experiences.
Food and drinks — from breakfast pastries to slushies and beer, it really is all-inclusive.
Included gear — towels, wetsuits, snorkels, lockers, and animal-friendly sunscreen make it easy to pack light.
We appreciated that the park takes care of the little details, letting families focus on fun and relaxation.
Discovery Cove Age Limits for Paid Activities
Some experiences at Discovery Cove have minimum ages or adult supervision requirements, so it’s important to plan ahead:
Animal Trek (No age restriction) – A guided nature walk where kids of all ages can learn about the park’s wildlife and habitat. Perfect for younger children and adults alike.
Dolphin Swim (6+) – All our kids loved this, and it’s perfect for school-aged children. Kids aged 6–12 must be accompanied by a paying adult. The experience is shallow, safe, and incredibly memorable. See: Is the Dolphin Swim at Discovery Cove Worth It for Kids?
Ray Feeding (6+) – Kids aged 6–12 must have an adult present. This was a hit with our group; the rays are friendly and the experience is interactive without being overwhelming.
Sea Venture Helmet Dive (10+) – Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Our 10-year-old loved it, though some kids we watched started and then came up — it can feel intimidating at first. The helmet keeps your head dry and allows breathing underwater, but children need to be comfortable with confined spaces. See: Is Sea Venture at Discovery Cove Worth It for Kids?
Shark Interaction (10+) – Kids under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. This is a thrilling encounter that allows children to get up close to small sharks in a controlled environment.
Shark Snorkel (10+) – Also requires an adult if under 13. Teens and confident swimmers can snorkel with sharks in the lagoon, making it a more adventurous option for older kids.
Life jackets are available for all younger children, helping build confidence in the water.
From our experience, even if some activities are off-limits for younger kids, there’s plenty to do for all ages — from beaches and pools to the Grand Reef and animal encounters like flamingos, otters, and birds. Planning by age ensures everyone in the family has a safe, fun, and memorable day.

Best Age for Discovery Cove (Overall)
From our experience, the ideal age is 6–12 years:
Old enough to snorkel and do the dolphin swim.
Young enough to still find the day magical and exciting.
Kids 10 years+ can participate in wider animal encounters
Confident swimmers get the most enjoyment from water-based activities.
Teens can still enjoy snorkelling and optional animal encounters, and the day provides a relaxed break from the high-energy theme parks.
Discovery Cove with Younger Kids (Under 6)
Younger children can still enjoy the beaches, pools, and lazy river, but they cannot participate in the main paid experiences. This is important to consider when weighing the cost — a visit without the dolphin swim may feel less “worth it” for families with toddlers.
Discovery Cove with Older Kids and Teens
Older children and teens often:
Enjoy more advanced snorkelling and exploring the Grand Reef.
Can still do the dolphin swim and optional add-ons like Sea Venture or Shark experiences.
Can participate in animal encounters unaccompanied
Appreciate a slower-paced day in between big rides and theme parks.
On our visit, the teens in our group loved floating along the lazy river with friends while still having the option to join the dolphin swim — it kept them engaged without feeling rushed.
Is Discovery Cove Worth It Without the Dolphin Swim?
The park can still be fun and relaxing without the dolphin swim, but for many families, it is the main attraction.
If your budget is tight, it’s possible to enjoy the park without the paid experiences.
Our family mixed it up — some kids did the swim, and others enjoyed the beaches — and everyone came away with memories.
Are Photo Packages Worth It?
Discovery Cove offers professional photo packages, but they are expensive, around $250 for digital photos in 2026.
On our first visit, we bought the package, but this time we asked a family member to take photos from shore. It worked perfectly, since the dolphin swim is in shallow water near the beach.
For Sea Venture, you can use your own underwater camera or Insta 360, which is what we used to capture all our underwater images, is more cost-effective and gives plenty of photo opportunities.

Final Verdict – Best Age for Discovery Cove
Best age: 6–12 years
Minimum good age: 6 years to participate in the Dolphin Swim
Still enjoyable for teens, but toddlers are not ideal due to cost and activity restrictions
Discovery Cove is expensive, so families should consider whether it fits into their Florida budget. We stayed 15 minutes away in a large family villa, which made the day easy to manage. For more accommodation info:

Where can I book tickets for Discovery Cove?
You can book Discovery Cove tickets either through GetYourGuide or directly with Discovery Cove, and in both cases you’ll need to select a specific date. Booking via GetYourGuide offers more flexibility, including free cancellation up to 24 hours before and a reserve now, pay later option in GBP. Booking direct gives you the same ticket options (with or without dolphin swim and additional parks like SeaWorld, Aquatica, and Busch Gardens), but payment is in US dollars and there’s no free cancellation — although you can change your date once by contacting Discovery Cove.
