When planning a ski holiday, it’s easy to get caught up in the slopes, ski schools, and accommodation — but the village itself is an important part of the experience, especially if you’re travelling with children. After four trips to La Thuile with Crystal Ski, in both December and February, we’ve spent plenty of time exploring the village and its surroundings. Here’s our take on what it’s really like for families.

Quiet, Not Boring

La Thuile is a smaller village than some of the bigger Alpine resorts, which is actually a huge benefit if you’re travelling with young children. Unlike busier French resorts like La Rosière, there’s less hustle and bustle, making it easier to manage children, strollers, or ski gear. You don’t have to worry about crowded lifts or long queues at ski schools — something we’ve noticed makes a huge difference during December and February school holidays.

Despite being quieter, the village is far from boring. There are enough cafés, shops, and restaurants to keep families occupied when they’re not on the slopes. We loved walking Joshua around the village, stopping for an Italian hot chocolate (for ideas, see: 👉where to eat in la Thuile) or picking up a few essentials from the local stores.

Pretty, Alpine Charm

La Thuile is nestled in Valle d’Aosta, surrounded by snow-covered mountains and pine forests. The village itself is compact but charming, with colourful chalets and traditional Alpine architecture. One of our favourite parts is the walk from Planibel apartments into the village — a snowy tree-lined path that Joshua loved playing along. Even non-skiers, like my mum, found it enjoyable to wander round the village, enjoy the views, and stop for a drink by the slopes.

Seasonal Atmosphere

One thing we really love about La Thuile is how the village is decorated for the season. In December, the streets and chalets are decked out with Christmas lights and decorations, making evening walks feel magical — perfect for little ones after a day on the slopes. For Valentine’s Week, you’ll see a few romantic touches around town, such as heart-shaped lights and festive décor in cafés, adding a cheerful vibe without being overwhelming.

The village also has delightful stops for treats, our favourite being the chocolate shop Chocolat, in La Thuile village. Their hot chocolate is rich and creamy — perfect for warming up after skiing or while enjoying a short stroll through the village. Sharing a chocolat fondue is a must for families, as they’re generous but large enough that little ones can’t finish it all alone!

Family-Friendly Atmosphere

In our experience, La Thuile is particularly family-friendly. While it doesn’t have a huge nightlife scene, the lack of crowds makes it much easier to enjoy meals, walk safely with children, and organise ski lessons. The smaller scale of the village means you feel safer letting kids explore a little or walk with older siblings.

The village also has shops, a few small parks, and plenty of places for hot chocolate or gelato, giving kids a break from skiing if they’re tired or not yet confident on the slopes.

Convenience for Skiing

La Thuile’s village is well-positioned for the slopes, with the Planibel residence and most self-catered apartments within a 5 minute walk of the main lifts. Even if you’re staying a bit further out, like we did on a DIY trip, the walk through the trees to the slopes is beautiful and safe for children.

Quick Summary

  • Quiet: La Thuile is less busy than some larger resorts, making it ideal for families.

  • Pretty: Traditional Alpine architecture and surrounding snowy scenery make it a charming base.

  • Not Boring: Plenty of cafés, restaurants, shops, and optional activities keep children and adults entertained.

  • Seasonal Fun: Beautiful Christmas and Valentine decorations, plus the Chocolat hot chocolate shop for treats.

  • Family-Focused: Safe village walks, easy access to ski schools, and plenty of off-slope activities make it ideal for families.

In our opinion, La Thuile strikes a perfect balance between a quiet, relaxing village and a practical base for skiing and family activities. It’s quieter than La Rosière, but not so small that you feel stuck — in fact, the relaxed atmosphere is one of the main reasons we keep returning.
