If you’re planning a trip and wondering what to pack for a USA road trip with kids from the UK, this is one area where small decisions make a big difference once you’re there.

This guide is for UK families preparing for a family road trip in America, particularly across destinations like Florida and Colorado, where long drives, changing climates and busy days all factor into what you actually need.

Quick Answer: What Do UK Families Really Need to Pack?

The biggest difference compared to a European holiday is this:

  • you’ll spend more time driving

  • weather can vary significantly between locations

  • and you need to be prepared for both activity and downtime

From our experience, packing well for a USA road trip is less about bringing more — and more about bringing the right things for long travel days, heat, and flexibility.

Over several trips to the US — including road trips through the Colorado Rockies, South Dakota, the Florida Keys and the Everglades — we found that a few practical choices made a noticeable difference to how easy the trip felt with a child.

Things like:

  • keeping essentials accessible in the car

  • planning for both heat (Florida) and cooler evenings (Colorado)

  • and having simple entertainment for long distances

all helped reduce stress and keep days running smoothly.

In this guide, we break down a realistic USA packing list for UK families, including:

  • what to pack for long road trips with kids

  • and what you actually use vs what you don’t

  • things that really helped that you probably didn't even think of

Clothing and Layers

The US is a huge country, and the climate can vary widely depending on where you travel. Even within the same trip you may experience cooler mornings, hot afternoons and strong air conditioning indoors.

For example, when we visited the Colorado Rockies, mornings and evenings were noticeably cooler, while Florida was hot and humid for most of the day. Comfortable clothing that works for long sightseeing days is essential.

We packed:

  • Lightweight shorts, t-shirts and dresses

  • A light jumper or cardigan for cooler mornings or strong air-conditioning

  • Swimwear (essential if your hotel has a pool)

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • Sandals or flip flops for hotel downtime

  • Hats and sunglasses for sun protection

  • swim shoes

For hot destinations or long sightseeing days, we also found these useful for children:

  • Cooling towel (this is the one we picked up for Joshua and it made a huge difference in keeping him comfortable in the heat)

  • Portable handheld fan

These small items helped keep our son comfortable during long outdoor days.

Pool and Downtime Essentials

Even when your trip is focused on sightseeing or national parks, pool time can make a huge difference when travelling with kids. After busy mornings exploring places like national parks, cities or wildlife areas, having a few hours to relax at the hotel pool helps everyone recharge. All the hotels we stayed at during our US trips provided pool towels, so we didn’t need to pack large towels ourselves.

For pool time we packed:

  • Swimwear

  • Flip flops or pool sandals

  • A couple of small pool toys like dive weights (we like these ones)

These small extras made downtime much more enjoyable between sightseeing days.

Essentials for Sightseeing Days

Many road trip days in the US start early and involve multiple stops. Whether you’re visiting national parks, exploring cities, or driving scenic routes, it helps to keep a small backpack with daily essentials.

We usually carried:

  • Refillable water bottles

  • Lightweight backpack for snacks and sunscreen

  • Sunscreen and SPF lip balm

  • Wet wipes and hand sanitiser

  • Small snack supply for children

When travelling longer distances, having snacks easily accessible in the car also avoids unnecessary stops.

Car Comfort Essentials for Long Drives

One of the biggest differences when road tripping in the US is the distance between destinations. Driving several hours in a day is very normal.

A few simple items can make these journeys far more comfortable for children.

Useful things to pack include:

  • Neck pillows for kids

  • A small cool bag for drinks and snacks

  • Refillable water bottles

On our road trips through Colorado and South Dakota, having snacks and drinks within reach made long drives much easier.

Tech and Entertainment

Technology plays a useful role when travelling long distances with children.

We usually bring:

  • Tablet or smartphone with headphones for long drives

  • Portable charger or power bank

  • Charging cables for multiple devices

  • Plug adaptor (US uses Type A and B plugs)

  • Multi-USB charger

A multi-USB charger can be a lifesaver if you arrive in a hotel room with limited plug sockets.

We also download offline maps in Google Maps and use an eSIM for mobile data, which usually costs around £20–£25 for a two-week trip.

Travel Health Kit

The US is very easy to travel in, but having a small health kit saves time searching for a pharmacy when you are tired after a long day.

We packed:

  • Plasters and antiseptic wipes

  • Antihistamines

  • Children’s pain relief

  • Insect repellent / Kids insect repellent - if you visit somewhere like the Florida keys this is helpful

  • Swimmers ear treatment (Joshua suffers with this)

  • Travel sickness pills (both boys suffer with this, helps on the long car journeys)

Travel sickness medication is particularly useful on winding mountain roads or long drives. Having these items already in your bag makes dealing with minor issues much easier while travelling. Although almost all these items are readily available in the US.

Packing Strategy: Small Tricks That Help

A few simple packing strategies can make family road trips much easier.

Use Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are one of the easiest ways to keep family luggage organised. Instead of everything being loose in one suitcase, each person’s clothing can be separated into different cubes. This makes it much easier to unpack quickly in hotels and keep track of clean versus worn clothes.

Choose Suitcases with Split Compartments

For longer family trips we use Surfanic Maxim roller bags, which have a split-level design. This allows you to separate: clean clothes, dirty laundry, wet swimwear or pool gear. This design makes hotel repacking far quicker when moving between destinations a US road trip.

Track Luggage with AirTags

Adding an AirTag tracker to each suitcase is one of the easiest ways to reduce stress when travelling long haul. If luggage is delayed or ends up on the wrong carousel, you can quickly see where it is through the tracking app.

For family trips this provides a surprising amount of peace of mind. We don’t actually buy the more expensive Apple AirTag version — the tracker we’ve linked is the one we personally use. It’s much cheaper and has always worked reliably for us.

Optional but Useful Items

These aren’t essential but can make travelling much easier.

  • Travel pillow for flights or long drives

  • Waterproof phone case (really useful for places like Florida)

  • Travel laundry detergent

  • Reusable shopping bag

  • Laundry bag for dirty clothes

Children also appreciate small comforts during early mornings or long transfers.

Before You Travel

Two things that make travelling in the United States much easier are mobile data and travel insurance.

Travel insurance is essential for US trips because healthcare costs are extremely high without cover. We recommend Just Travel Cover, which compares multiple insurers so you can choose the policy that best fits your trip.

Final Thoughts

A family road trip in the United States can be one of the most memorable ways to explore the country. From mountain landscapes and national parks to wildlife encounters and coastal drives, having your own car gives families the flexibility to travel at their own pace.

Packing a few practical items for comfort, entertainment and organisation makes long driving days much easier — particularly when travelling with children. With the right preparation, a US road trip becomes not just a way to travel between destinations, but one of the highlights of the entire trip.
