The Ultimate Family Packing Guide for a Tour of Turkey

Planning a family trip to Turkey can feel a little overwhelming — there’s so much to think about. Between wandering ancient ruins, marveling at fairy chimneys in Cappadocia, exploring bustling markets in Istanbul, and paddling in Pamukkale’s warm terraces, it’s easy to forget the small stuff… until you find yourself in the middle of the Grand Bazaar, or standing barefoot on blindingly white travertines, wishing you’d packed one more change of clothes.

We learned the hard way on our first trip to Turkey in August School Holidays with our young son Joshua: pack smart, and your holiday will be so much smoother. Forget something important, and you’ll feel it in the middle of a hot day with little legs ready to quit. After trial and error, here’s our ultimate, kid-tested family packing list for Turkey — practical, stress-free, and easy to follow.

Clothing & Layers

Turkey’s weather varies hugely depending on where you are and the time of year. Istanbul and coastal cities can reach over 30°C in summer, with cooler evenings, while Cappadocia might be warm in the day but chilly in the mornings and evenings. Pamukkale gets very hot on the terraces, especially in August.

For our trip, we packed:

  • Shorts, t-shirts, and dresses for daytime

  • A light jumper or cardigan for cooler evenings

  • Swimwear — absolutely essential for Pamukkale, hotel pools, or a quick beach stop

  • Comfortable walking shoes or sandals for kids— ones that attach to the feet are recommended as cobblestones, ruins, and fairy chimneys aren’t forgiving

  • Sandals for casual days and poolside

  • Hats and sunglasses for sun protection - When he was young we always used a sun protection t shirt in the pool

  • Modest clothing for mosque visits — shoulders and knees covered, and scarves for women

  • I highly recommend a mini fan or a cooling towel for keeping kids cool

Tip: Layering is key — mornings in Cappadocia can be surprisingly cool, even in summer.

Essentials for Sightseeing

Turkey is full of walking and exploring, so having the right gear makes a huge difference.

We always had:

Tip: Keep snacks and water accessible. We found these lifesavers during long afternoons in Ephesus or wandering Istanbul’s Topkapi Palace.

Tech & Entertainment

Even the best itineraries include some downtime. For us, this meant:

Tip: Download offline maps and guides in advance — internet coverage can be patchy in smaller towns or valleys in Cappadocia.

Toiletries & Health

Packing a small family health kit can save headaches later:

  • Basic first aid: plasters, antiseptic wipes, antihistamines

  • Prescription medications in original packaging

  • Swimming ear pre treatment (we’ve had two travel related ear infections from swim water, but no issues since buying this exact product!)

  • Children’s pain relief and rehydration salts (we have been in international pharmacies trying to explain what we want which is always hard, it is worth the space to just have your own, if you don’t need it then it’s a win win! Tip – grab the sachets to save space)

  • Travel sickness pills – we recommend this Stugeron as kids 5 years + can also take them, we literally do not go anywhere without these as both Mark and Joshua suffer with movement sickness on boats, planes and cars!

  • Shampoo, soap, and toothpaste — hotels provide some basics, but not always kid-friendly brands

  • Insect repellent adults and kids should have different kinds

Tip: Bring a compact family travel kit — we recommend this one 👉 First Aid Kit

Essentials not for your Suitcase

Before you travel to Turkey, two small decisions can save a lot of stress (and money). We highly recommend buying an eSIM before you leave to avoid expensive roaming charges — it gives you instant data access for maps, bookings, and keeping in touch without hunting for WiFi. It’s also essential to arrange comprehensive travel insurance; we personally recommend Just Travel Cover because they compare multiple insurers to find personalised cover that suits your family’s needs.

Optional but Useful Items

  • Swim shoes for slippery Pamukkale terraces and water proof case for your camera

  • Travel wash for mid-trip washes

  • Favorite snacks for picky eaters

  • Travel pillow for flights or long drives

Tip: Little extras make a big difference. Joshua loved having his own snacks and pillow on early flights.

What suit case works best

We absolutely love our Surfanic Maxim 3.0 120L Roller Bags for big trips and family holidays. The split-level design makes packing so much easier (wet away from dry, clean away from dirty), they’re super tough with reinforced corners, smooth quiet wheels, and they hold so much more than you’d expect. Ours have survived years of airport abuse and still look great. We also pop an Air Tag in each bag — they’re only around £20 for four and honestly give us total peace of mind knowing exactly where our luggage is at all times. If you want stress-free travel days, these are 100% worth it.

Packing Strategy

We found a few packing hacks made life easier:

  • Use packing cubes or zip-lock bags to separate kids’ clothes

  • Pack one day’s outfit + swimwear in your carry-on in case luggage is delayed

Tip: Don’t overpack — Turkey has plenty of markets and shops for souvenirs or emergency items.

Key Takeaways

Packing for Turkey with kids is all about comfort, practicality, and planning for variety:

  • Comfort first: cobblestones, ruins, and caves demand good shoes

  • Sun protection: the August heat is no joke

  • Flexible layers: mornings in Cappadocia vs afternoons in Istanbul

  • Entertainment and snacks: keep kids happy on long flights or transfers
