Planning a Christmas trip to Lapland from the UK? Once you start looking into it, one of the biggest questions is:
What does the week actually look like day‑to‑day?
Is it full‑on or fairly relaxed?
Is there enough to do for a full week?
How does everything fit together — skiing, excursions, and Christmas itself?
This guide is for UK families travelling with school‑age children who want a realistic, practical view of how a Christmas Lapland trip with Crystal Ski actually works — not just the highlights.
Quick Answer: What Does a Week in Lapland Actually Look Like?
A typical week in Ruka is structured but surprisingly relaxed.
Days are built around:
short ski sessions
a few key excursions (like Santa, reindeer or snowmobiling)
and plenty of downtime in between
It’s not non‑stop activity — and that balance is what makes it work so well with kids.
We visited Ruka over Christmas 2025 as a family of three, booking a week‑long (Sunday to Sunday) package through Crystal Ski. Having everything organised in advance — from flights to transfers and activities — made it much easier to manage, especially for a first trip. Planning a trip to Ruka with kids? This itinerary is based on our real experience, showing how the week flowed in practice — what felt relaxed, what needed planning, and how everything fitted together with ski school and activities.

Sunday 21st – Travel Day & Arrival in Ruka
Our flight from Birmingham was at 7:50am. Arrival into Kuusamo Airport was incredibly straightforward — it’s small, quick to navigate, and everything runs efficiently.
passport control was quick
bags arrived fast
Crystal Ski reps were waiting immediately after arrivals
From there, we were directed straight onto the coaches for the transfer, which only took around 20–25 minutes. That short transfer is a real advantage compared to other Lapland destinations.
During the transfer, the rep:
handed out ski passes
confirmed ski school timings
went through our excursions
It’s worth noting we couldn’t get all of this detail in advance, so getting it clearly explained on arrival was helpful.
We were dropped about a minute’s walk from Ruka Chalets and were able to check in early, which made everything feel very relaxed from the start.
The apartment itself was warm, modern and well equipped. If you’re choosing where to stay, this explains why it works so well: Ruka Chalets Review
That first afternoon was deliberately low‑key. We:
picked up ski equipment (simple process, no vouchers needed)
stored everything in the ski lockers in our building
had a late lunch in the village (Colorado, I highly recommend it)
did a small food shop
Joshua immediately noticed sledges left around the village and spent most of the time running between small slopes, which set the tone for the week.

Monday 22nd – First Ski Day
Ski school started slightly later (11:00–12:30), which gave us time to get our bearings.
There are two ways to reach lessons:
take the gondola down to the valley
or take a chairlift and ski down
We used the gondola on day one, then skied down for the rest of the week once we were familiar with the layout.
The setup felt calm and very beginner‑friendly, which worked well for getting into the routine.
While Joshua was in lessons, we explored the slopes. The runs are short, the lifts are quick, and everything is very manageable.
One thing to be aware of in December is the daylight window — it’s light from roughly 9:30am to 2:30pm. It takes a day or two to adjust, but it adds to the overall atmosphere rather than taking away from it.
That evening was simple — we stayed in and had dinner at the chalet, which became our default routine.
This first part of the trip was much easier than we expected — everything from transfers to getting settled was already taken care of. → See what’s included in the trip we booked

Tuesday 23rd – Skiing & Snowmobiling
By day two, everything felt easy.
Lessons ran 10:00–11:30, and we skied around that. The conditions were excellent, and the light in Lapland is noticeably different — softer, with pastel tones that make the whole place feel atmospheric.
We continued the same rhythm:
skiing in the morning
back to the chalet for lunch
relaxing before heading out again if we wanted to
That evening we had snowmobiling booked. Pick‑up was on time at 7.15pm and everything ran smoothly, home by 10pm.

Wednesday 24th – Christmas Eve
The day followed the same relaxed structure — ski school in the morning, followed by a break and lunch back at the chalet.
In the afternoon, we had a reindeer ride booked for 1.15pm. This was a quieter, slower experience and worked well as a contrast to skiing, home by 5pm.
Full experience here: Is a Reindeer Ride in Lapland Worth It?
The evening was low‑key. We stayed local and kept things simple with a bar meal and a game of pool at Colorado bar.

Thursday 25th – Christmas Day
Christmas Day was slightly different. Slopes opened later (11.30am). Ski lesson ran 12:00–1:30pm.
In the afternoon, we had our Santa experience booked, this started at 2.45pm and ran till around 7pm.

That evening we came back to the chalet and had dinner there — simple, but it worked well after a full day.
This is the kind of experience that feels very different when it’s all organised for you — everything runs smoothly, and you’re not worrying about timings or logistics with kids.

Friday 26th – A Slower Day
We didn’t plan anything specific.
We skied in the morning, then spent the afternoon walking, sledging and enjoying the village. These ended up being some of the nicest, most relaxed moments of the trip.
Saturday 27th – Final Full Day
This was our snowiest day, but everything still ran smoothly.
We skied in the morning and then used the afternoon for something different — trying Ruka Coaster and spending time in the village.
It was a good way to finish the week without overloading the day.
Sunday 28th – Travel Home
Pick‑up was mid‑morning, giving us time to pack up and have a final lunch in the apartment.
Kuusamo Airport is small, and most flights leave around the same time, so there was some waiting — but everything was organised and ran smoothly overall.
Final Thoughts
What surprised us most about the week was how well balanced it felt.
The days weren’t full-on. They followed a simple rhythm:
skiing in short blocks
key activities on selected days
plenty of downtime in between
That balance is what made it work as a family trip, especially over Christmas.
A Lapland Christmas trip sounds like a lot to organise, but in reality it felt far more straightforward than we expected once everything was set up properly.
For us, that’s what made the whole experience so enjoyable — we could focus on the moments rather than the logistics.
