Planning a Christmas in Lapland from the UK? Here’s our real Ruka family itinerary with Crystal Ski, perfect for UK school holidays, including Santa, skiing, reindeer and snowmobiling.

If you’re planning a Christmas trip to Lapland with kids, chances are you’re trying to picture what the week actually looks like.

· Is it full-on?

· Is there enough to do?

· And how does everything fit together with ski school, excursions, and Christmas itself?

So, here’s our real, honest, day-by-day Lapland itinerary in Ruka with Crystal Ski, based on our family trip over Christmas 2025. We went in knowing roughly what we’d booked — but like you, we wanted to know how it really flows, what feels rushed, what feels relaxed, and whether it actually works as a family holiday. Spoiler: it really does!

🧳 Sunday 21st – Travel Day & Arrival in Ruka

Our flight from Birmingham was at 7:50am. Kuusamo airport is tiny, which makes arriving incredibly easy:

  • No special paperwork needed beyond passports

  • Bags came quickly (there are only two carousels!)

  • Toilets available straight after arrivals

Crystal Ski staff were waiting right outside and directed everyone straight onto coaches. Our transfer to Ruka was only 20–25 minutes, which is a huge advantage of this resort compared to some Lapland destinations.

On the coach, the rep:

  • Gave us our ski passes

  • Explained ski school timings

  • Went through our excursions

I’d actually emailed Crystal before the trip to ask for this info and they couldn’t provide it — so it’s helpful to know you get everything on arrival.

We were dropped literally 60 seconds’ walk from Ruka Chalets, and even better — they checked us in early.

Our apartment was modern, warm, and extremely well-equipped. (Full review here → Ruka Chalets Review: The Perfect Family Base for a Stress-Free Lapland Ski Holiday.)

We wandered the village, and Joshua immediately noticed something magical: sledges just left everywhere. He’d grab one, slide down a mound, leave it, and carry on. Pure Lapland joy.

That afternoon we:

  • Rented skis (easy system, no voucher needed)

  • Stored them in the ski locker room in our building (huge bonus)

  • Had lunch at Colorado Sports Bar — which became our favourite spot all week

We did a K-Market food shop (~€60 for the basics) and ate in most nights.

🎿 Monday 22nd – First Ski Day & Getting Our Bearings

Ski lessons started a little later (11am - 12.30pm), which gave us time to work out the lifts.

There are two ways to get to lessons:

  • Gondola from the village

  • Chairlift up and ski down (we did this from then on)

Joshua enjoyed his lesson, though we’d put him in a higher-level group and Ruka is very beginner-focused (which we explain fully here → Skiing in Ruka with Kids: Is It Beginner-Friendly?).

It was cold, so they even took the kids in for a warm-up towards the end — not the norm, but perfect for day one.

Mark and I explored the slopes and honestly? The conditions were beautiful. Short runs, quick lifts, and magical snow-covered trees everywhere. The daylight hours in December are short in Lapland, with it getting light around 9:30am and dark again by about 2:30pm, and while that took a bit of getting used to, it actually added to the magical, wintery feel of the whole trip.

We stayed in and made chilli that night.

🌅 Tuesday 23rd – Perfect Ski Conditions & Snowmobiling

Lessons ran 10:00–11:30. The sky this day was unreal — pastel, pink, glowing. Lapland light is like nothing else.

We skied most of the day. One thing to note in Ruka:

  • Not many on-slope cafés

  • Most food is in the village or valley

We often went home for lunch — taking boots off, warming up, and using the drying cabinet (absolute game-changer).

That evening was snowmobiling. Pickup was 7:15pm, right on time.

🦌 Wednesday 24th – Christmas Eve & Reindeer Ride

Morning ski lesson as usual, then home for lunch. At 1:30pm we went on our reindeer ride. This experience is slower, calmer, and very atmospheric. Full review here → Is a Reindeer Ride in Lapland Worth It? Our Honest Review.

Dinner was back at Colorado Bar, where we ended up playing pool with another family.

🎅 Thursday 25th – Christmas Day & Visiting Santa

Slopes opened later (11.30am). Ski lesson ran 12:00–1:30pm.

At 2:45pm, we were picked up in the village square for Santa’s Secret Cottage, run by Nordic Holidays.

This was the emotional heart of the trip.

You can read exactly what happens here → What Actually Happens When You Visit Santa in Finland.

We got home around 7pm and made our Christmas dinner. Not quite full British (no pigs in blankets!), but honestly? the hubby still pulled a pretty decent dinner out the bag!

🎿 Friday 26th – Boxing Day Skiing & Snow Walk

No activities planned. Some families did huskies today. We skied most of the day, then went for a snow walk and sledging — one of my favourite afternoons of the whole trip.

Hot chocolate included, obviously.

❄️ Saturday 27th – Snowy Day & Bowling

This was the snowiest day we had. Still great skiing — all lifts have bubbles for protection. In the afternoon we tried bowling (€30 per lane per hour) and the Ruka Ski Roller Coaster, the most unexpectant fun activity!

We took the opportunity to sample the Churros van, absolutely delicious!

✈️ Sunday 28th – Travel Home

Pickup was 10:30–10:50am. Checkout at 12pm. Kuusamo airport is very small and all flights leave around the same time, so there was a wait — but Crystal handled it well and no one was left behind. We made lunch in the apartment before leaving (highly recommend).

Despite a small delay, everything went smoothly.

🏔️ Final Thoughts: Is Christmas in Lapland with Crystal Ski Worth It?

Genuinely? Yes. 100%.

It’s:

  • Magical for kids

  • Surprisingly relaxing

  • Well organised

  • And incredibly special
