If you’re considering booking a family trip to Lapland, chances are you’ve already come across Crystal Ski. When we were planning our December trip to Ruka, Finland, we had a lot of the same questions you probably do:

  • Is it actually worth the money?

  • Is it really family-friendly?

  • Is it as magical as it looks online — or just good marketing?

After experiencing it ourselves as a family — including reindeer sleigh rides, skiing, the Ruka coaster, meeting Santa, and snowmobiling — here’s our honest, no-fluff review of Crystal Ski in Ruka, Finland, from a parent’s point of view.

Why We Chose Crystal Ski for Lapland

Planning a Lapland trip independently can be overwhelming, especially with kids. Between transfers, winter gear, excursions, and the language barrier, it can quickly turn into a logistical headache. We have always has a great experience with Crystal in the past so for our first trip we opted to go with them, plus they had the option to add on all of your experiences.

What attracted us to Crystal Ski was:

  • Everything is packaged and organised

  • They specialise in ski and Lapland holidays

  • They’re clearly set up for families

  • Excursions like Santa visits and reindeer rides are easy to add on

  • Transfers, accommodation, and logistics are all handled for you

For us, this was a big plus. When you’re travelling to the Arctic with children in December, the last thing you want is to be worrying about complicated transport or whether something will go wrong.

First Impressions: The Arrival & Transfers

From the moment we arrived, the trip felt well organised and smooth. The transfers to Ruka were efficient, staff were helpful, and everything was clearly designed with families in mind.

At only 20 – 30 minutes from Kuusamo airport to resort this is almost unheard of and a massive bonus when travelling with children.

Where to stay in Ruka

Ruka village offers a wide range of chalets for families, but we recommend booking on the village side rather than in the valley. Ski lessons are held in the valley, but it’s just a short gondola or ski ride away. The village location also has more dining options and evening entertainment, making it a convenient and fun base for your family holiday.

Ruka Chalets: Our Choice

For our trip, we chose to stay in one of the Ruka chalets on the village side, and it was perfect for our family. The chalet was cozy, spacious, and well-equipped for winter stays, with plenty of room to store gear and warm up after a day on the slopes. While the ski lessons are held in the valley, it’s just a short gondola or ski ride away, so we didn’t miss out at all. Staying in the village also meant we had more evening dining options and entertainment, which made relaxing after a busy day with the kids much easier.

The Excursions: This Is Where Crystal Ski Really Shines

This is where the trip becomes truly special.

We did:

All of these were professionally run, well-organised, and genuinely magical for the kids.

Skiing in Ruka with Crystal Ski

If you’re travelling with kids, Ruka is a fantastic choice.

  • The slopes are very beginner-friendly

  • Ski school is good for beginners

  • Everything is set up to be simple and stress-free

Even if your kids have never skied before, this is a great place for them to start. For our son, who was a bit more advanced, ski school didn’t offer much new, but he loved spending time in the ski park, practicing jumps and tricks — so there’s fun for all levels, not just beginners.

What We Loved about Ruka

The amazing skiing – not like anywhere else we had ever been before!

The quality of the excursions and the little extras like snow biking in the evening once the slopes were shut for skiing and Ruka Coaster
How magical it felt for the kids on the snowy walks
Not having to plan every tiny detail ourselves - Crystal organised all that for us!
The feeling of being in a real-life Christmas film

Things to Be Aware Of

To keep this honest and realistic:

  • This is not a cheap trip, Finland was quite expensive - if you keep an eye out I’ve seen ‘free child’ places available with crystal

  • You will spend extra money on excursions and activities

  • December was busy due to Christmas, but the slopes were not crowded

  • It’s very cold (obviously!)

  • If you aren’t too bothered about seeing Santa avoid Christmas week, it’ll be cheaper

But in our experience, the value is in the memories. This isn’t a normal holiday — it’s a once-in-a-lifetime type of trip for most families.

Is Crystal Ski in Ruka Worth It for Families?

In our honest opinion: yes — absolutely.

If you want:

  • Amazing skiing with skies like I have never seen anywhere in my life!
