Planning a Lapland trip independently can feel overwhelming, especially with kids. Between transfers, winter gear, excursions and navigating an unfamiliar destination, the logistics quickly add up.
We’ve had positive experiences with Crystal Ski in the past, so for our first trip to Lapland, we chose a package approach — particularly because everything could be organised in advance, including excursions.

First Impressions: Arrival & Transfers
From the moment we arrived, everything felt well organised and easy to navigate. Transfers to Ruka were efficient, staff were helpful, and the overall experience felt clearly designed with families in mind.
One of the biggest positives was the transfer time — at just 20–30 minutes from Kuusamo Airport to Ruka, it’s unusually short for a Lapland trip and a real bonus when travelling with children.

What’s It Like Travelling to Lapland with Kids?
Cold. Very cold. But also absolutely magical. Once you’re dressed properly, the cold becomes part of the adventure rather than a problem. And honestly? Seeing your kids in real Lapland, surrounded by snow, reindeer, and Christmas magic is something you’ll never forget.

Where to Stay in Ruka
Ruka offers a wide range of family‑friendly accommodation, but one of the biggest decisions is whether to stay in the village or the valley.
For most families, we’d strongly recommend staying in the village. While ski lessons are held in the valley, it’s only a short gondola or ski ride away, so it’s easy to access. The village, however, has far more restaurants, cafés and evening activities, which makes a big difference after a full day in the snow.
Staying in the village also means everything is on your doorstep — no need for additional transport or long walks in cold conditions, which is especially helpful with children.
Ruka Chalets: Our Choice
We chose to stay in a Ruka chalet in the village, and it worked perfectly for our family. The chalet was cosy, spacious and well set up for winter stays, with plenty of room to store gear and warm up after being outside.
Although ski lessons were based in the valley, getting there was straightforward and never felt like a hassle. What made the biggest difference for us was being able to come back in the afternoon and have restaurants and activities within walking distance, rather than needing to travel again in the evening.

The Excursions: This Is Where Crystal Ski Really Shines
This is where the trip really becomes special. The winter activities aren’t just add‑ons — they completely shape the experience, breaking up the days and making it feel very different from a typical European ski holiday.

It’s a quick, easy activity but something children absolutely love — and it’s perfect for filling gaps between bigger excursions or adding something fun on a quieter afternoon. It ended up being one of those unexpected highlights that really added to the trip.

Skiing in Ruka with Crystal Ski
If you’re travelling with kids, Ruka is a fantastic choice.
The slopes are very beginner-friendly
Ski school is good for beginners
Everything is set up to be simple and stress-free
Even if your kids have never skied before, this is a great place for them to start. For our son, who was a bit more advanced, ski school didn’t offer much new, but he loved spending time in the ski park, practicing jumps and tricks — so there’s fun for all levels, not just beginners.

What We Loved about Ruka

Things to Be Aware Of
To keep this honest and realistic:
This is not a cheap trip if you do it in December and Finland was quite expensive - however, if you keep an eye out I’ve seen ‘free child’ places available with crystal at other times of the year, including February half term where this same trip was over £1,000 cheaper than what we paid to go over Christmas
December was busy due to Christmas, but the slopes were not crowded
It’s very cold (obviously!) - again you must see the packing list, honestly trust me on this one!
If you aren’t too bothered about seeing Santa avoid Christmas week, it’ll be cheaper
But in our experience, the value is in the memories. This isn’t a normal holiday — it’s a once-in-a-lifetime type of trip for most families.
Is Crystal Ski in Ruka Worth It for Families?
