We stayed at Holiday World Polynesia during October half term with our 8-year-old son, drawn in by its themed design, excellent family facilities and, if I'm honest, the private hot tub on the balcony.
In this Holiday World Polynesia review with kids, I'll share what our stay was really like, from the family rooms and food to the entertainment, pools and location, and whether it's worth booking for October half term.

Quick Answer: Is Holiday World Polynesia Good for Families?
Overall, yes. Holiday World Polynesia is one of the most family-focused hotels we've stayed in near Malaga. The facilities are extensive, the themed environment is genuinely fun, the family rooms are enormous by Spanish hotel standards and there are activities running throughout the day.
That said, our October half term stay came with a few caveats. The pools were very cold, and the Beach Club and water park facilities were closed for the season, which made a noticeable difference to the overall value.
Would we return? Yes, but only during the warmer months. In summer, with all the water attractions open, I think we'd have a very different view of the value for money.

Why We Booked Holiday World Polynesia for October Half Term
When researching the best family hotels near Malaga, Holiday World Polynesia consistently appeared near the top of recommendation lists. As we were travelling during a busy school holiday, we wanted somewhere with enough on-site facilities to keep our son entertained without needing to leave the resort every single day.
What appealed most was the combination of:
Large family rooms
Extensive facilities
Family entertainment
Resort atmosphere
Themed design
Private hot tub suite option
On paper, it looked like an ideal choice for families wondering where to stay near Malaga with kids, particularly those who want a hotel that offers plenty to do on-site.
One of the biggest draws was just how much is included. If you're searching for a family resort near Malaga with lots of facilities, the list is genuinely impressive and includes:
Playground
Mini golf
Games room
Entertainment team
Live music and performances
Kids' club
Sports facilities
Bowling
Cinema
Tennis courts
Spa
For an October half term family holiday, this range of facilities was a big reassurance. Even if the weather turned or we had a quieter day, there was always something to do without venturing out.
The location also appealed. Rather than staying directly in the city, the resort provides a good base for exploring Malaga Province with kids, giving us easy access to attractions and day trips while still feeling like a proper holiday resort.
If you're weighing up your options, see our full guide: Best Family Hotels Near Malaga, as we actually also visited a number of hotels in the same trip.
First Impressions
Holiday World Polynesia certainly makes an impression.
The Polynesian theme starts immediately in reception and carries throughout the entire resort. Water features, bridges, tropical styling and themed décor make it feel very different from many of the more standard Costa del Sol hotels, and it instantly sets a holiday mood.
Our son immediately loved exploring, and it was easy to see why. The hotel feels enormous and almost resembles a cruise ship on land, with different areas, pools and attractions to discover. Within minutes of arriving, it was clear we'd probably spend the first few days simply finding our way around and working out what we wanted to do.
Despite it being a busy half-term week, reception was efficient and check-in was straightforward, which is always a relief when you're arriving with tired, excited children after a flight. First impressions were exactly what we'd hoped for from a family-friendly resort near Malaga: fun, well-themed and packed with things to do.

Pools and Family Facilities
This was, unfortunately, the biggest disappointment of our October stay.
The Pools Were Too Cold
The outdoor pools at Holiday World Polynesia are not heated, and by late October the water was simply too cold for comfortable swimming.
While a few children were braving it, our son had very little interest, as the temperature made staying in the water genuinely unpleasant. For a family holiday built around pool time, this was a real letdown.
In fairness, we visited in late October when the weather wasn't at its best, which won't have helped. What's telling, though, is that during the same trip we spent a few days at another hotel, the RIU, and on the couple of lovely, sunny days we had, we happily braved the pool there. At Polynesia, we didn't feel tempted even once. Whether that came down to the pool setup, the shade or simply the water temperature, it made a noticeable difference to how much use we got out of the pools at each hotel.
It's worth knowing there is an indoor heated pool within the health club/spa area, but this comes at an additional cost (around €10 per hour per person), and swim caps are required. For a family wanting to spend the day splashing about, this isn't a practical alternative to the main pools.
If warm pool water is important to your family, this is a crucial point to consider before booking an autumn or winter stay.
The Beach Club and Water Park Situation
One thing we didn't fully appreciate before arriving was just how much the season affects the Holiday World Beach Club and its water park facilities.
The Beach Club, which is the resort's standout attraction, is a huge seafront leisure complex with multiple swimming pools, slides, a splash zone, jacuzzis and themed areas. However, it operates seasonally and typically closes for the winter through to April.
This had a significant impact on our overall experience. For many families, the Beach Club and water park are the main reason for choosing Holiday World Polynesia in the first place. Arriving to find these facilities winding down or unavailable took away one of the biggest selling points.

Family Rooms
One of the biggest reasons families choose Holiday World Polynesia is the accommodation, and having stayed there, I can see why. We booked one of the family suites with a private hot tub on the balcony, which ended up being one of the highlights of our entire stay.
Holiday World Polynesia is well known for its spacious family suites in Malaga, which are significantly larger than the standard hotel rooms you'll find across much of Spain. The resort offers a range of room types, from standard family rooms through to premium themed suites, many of which include added extras like private hot tubs, making it a strong contender if you're searching for family rooms in Malaga with a private jacuzzi or a bit of luxury alongside the kids' facilities.
What Worked Well
Our suite genuinely impressed us, particularly for a family-focused resort. The standout features included:
A very spacious, well-thought-out layout
A separate lounge area, ideal for relaxing once the kids were in bed
A kitchenette with a microwave and hob, perfect for warming milk, snacks or simple meals
A large bathroom
Plenty of storage for a week's worth of family luggage
A large private balcony
A private hot tub (if this room is booked)
Compared with many family hotel rooms in Spain, the extra space was immediately noticeable. Having a separate living area and a kitchenette made a huge difference with an 8-year-old, giving us room to spread out rather than living on top of each other. The private hot tub was a lovely bonus, and something Joshua absolutely loved after a busy day out.
What Didn't Work So Well
It wasn't completely flawless. Some areas of the room felt slightly dated and could benefit from a refresh. As the resort is so large, room location can also make a real difference to how much walking you'll do each day, so it's worth requesting a room closer to the main facilities if mobility or convenience is a priority.
Overall, though, the family rooms are one of Holiday World Polynesia's strongest selling points. If you're looking for spacious family accommodation near Malaga with proper separate living space, a kitchenette and the option of a private hot tub, this resort is hard to beat.

Entertainment and Kids' Activities
If the pools were the biggest disappointment during our stay, the entertainment was easily the biggest positive. Holiday World Polynesia is very much geared towards families, and there seemed to be something happening throughout the day and into the evening, creating a genuinely lively, family-oriented atmosphere.
This is one of the reasons the resort is so popular with parents searching for a family hotel near Malaga with kids' entertainment and activities. Rather than simply providing a pool and hoping children entertain themselves, the resort runs a structured programme designed to keep all ages busy.
Daytime Activities
During the day, there was a great mix of organised fun, including:
Sports and group games
A supervised kids' club
Playground
Mini golf
Bowling
Ping pong
A games room and arcade
The kids' club was aimed at younger children and typically runs organised sessions throughout the day, offering crafts, games and activities in a safe, supervised environment. This gave us the chance to enjoy a little downtime while Joshua joined in with children his own age. As with most resorts, older teens are less catered for by the club itself, but there's plenty else to keep them occupied, including sports facilities and the games room.
It's worth noting that while much of the daytime entertainment was included, some activities came at an extra cost. Things like bowling, mini golf and certain arcade or games room activities were chargeable, so it's worth factoring in a little extra spending money if your children enjoy these. That said, there was still plenty of free, included entertainment to keep them busy throughout the day.
Evening Entertainment
The evenings were where the resort really came alive, with a varied programme that included:
Family-friendly stage shows
Live music
Mini discos for the children
Interactive games and entertainment
Our son loved the evening entertainment, and there was almost always something going on to round off the day. The mini disco in particular was a firm favourite, and it's the kind of thing that makes a resort feel special for younger children.
Why the Entertainment Mattered So Much
The strong entertainment programme became especially important during our October half term stay, simply because we couldn't spend long periods in the cold outdoor pools. Having a packed schedule of daytime and evening activities meant there was always an alternative, and it genuinely saved the holiday from feeling flat during the cooler moments.
If you're visiting outside peak summer, this is worth bearing in mind. The entertainment and kids' club can make a huge difference when the weather isn't quite warm enough for full days by the pool. Overall, if you're specifically looking for a Malaga family resort with excellent kids' clubs and entertainment, this is one of Holiday World Polynesia's biggest strengths.

Food and Restaurants
Food at Holiday World Polynesia was good without being exceptional, which is fairly typical of a large all-inclusive resort.
The Main Buffet Restaurant
Most of our meals were taken in the main buffet restaurant, Maeva, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Set within the hotel's tropical, lake-view surroundings, it offers a wide variety of hot and cold dishes and international cuisine, with something to suit most tastes.
There was always plenty of choice, and importantly, there were always child-friendly options available, including:
Pasta
Pizza
Chips
Fresh fruit
Desserts
Grilled meats
For families wondering what the food is like at Holiday World Polynesia, it's a classic buffet setup. It's reliable, filling and there's enough variety to keep most children happy.
Is the Food Repetitive?
This is one of the most common questions families ask, and honestly, yes, we did notice some repetition after a few days, particularly at dinner. This is a frequent theme in guest reviews too, with many noting the buffet can feel samey over a longer stay.
À La Carte and Themed Restaurants
One really important point to know before booking, especially outside peak summer, is that the à la carte themed restaurants at Holiday World are only available in high season.
During our October stay, this meant our main dining option was the buffet. If you're visiting in summer, you'll typically have access to additional themed restaurants such as the Uru Wok Asian restaurant and the Polynesian-inspired Ahima'a fusion restaurant, which add welcome variety. If dining variety matters to you, it's well worth checking exactly what will be open during your dates.
Drinks and Snacks
The all-inclusive package made it easy to grab food and drinks throughout the day, which worked particularly well when travelling with a child. There were poolside snack bars and bars serving drinks throughout the day, so we never struggled to keep Joshua topped up with snacks and drinks between meals.
Our Verdict on the Food
Overall, the food was better than we expected but not a standout feature of the stay. For a family all-inclusive, it did the job well, with enough variety and child-friendly choices to keep everyone fed and happy.

Location: Is It a Good Base for Exploring?
Holiday World Polynesia is well positioned for a family holiday, sitting around 20 minutes from Malaga Airport between the popular resorts of Benalmádena and Fuengirola. This makes it a convenient base, particularly if you're arriving with tired children and want to keep the transfer short and stress-free.
Do You Need a Car?
Not necessarily.
If you're planning to spend most of your time enjoying the resort's facilities, you could easily manage without one. There's more than enough on-site to keep families busy, and taxis or local transport can cover the occasional trip.
One thing to be aware of if you do hire a car is parking. Holiday World Polynesia offers on-site parking, but it comes at an additional cost (€ 16.50 per day), rather than being included in your stay. It's worth factoring this into your budget, as the daily charges can add up over the course of a week. If you're only planning the occasional day trip, you may find that a mix of taxis and organised excursions works out more convenient, and potentially cheaper, than paying for parking every night.
That said, we'd recommend hiring a car if you want to make the most of the surrounding area. Having your own transport gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, which is especially valuable with children. Great Family Day Trips From Holiday World Polynesia
One of the resort's biggest advantages is how well located it is for exploring the wider Costa del Sol. During our stay, we found it made an excellent base for a range of family day trips.
The pretty coastal towns of Benalmádena and Fuengirola are right on the doorstep, both offering beaches, marinas and family-friendly attractions. Malaga city is also within easy reach, perfect for a day of sightseeing, culture and exploring.

Is Holiday World Polynesia Worth the Money?
This is the most important question, and the answer really depends on when you visit.
For summer visitors, I'd say yes. When everything is up and running, Holiday World Polynesia offers excellent value for a family holiday. You're paying for a genuinely impressive range of facilities, including:
Multiple swimming pools
Water attractions and slides
Access to the Holiday World Beach Club which has multiple water slides on offer
A packed daytime and evening entertainment programme
Sports and leisure facilities
Large, spacious family accommodation
With all of this open and included, it's easy to see why so many families rate the resort so highly and consider it worth every penny during the warmer months.
For October half term, the value equation becomes more complicated. The family rooms remain excellent, the entertainment is still strong, and the resort retains its fun, family-focused atmosphere. However, losing access to the major water facilities removed one of the key reasons many families choose to book here in the first place. When the pools are too cold to enjoy and the Beach Club is closed for the season, you're effectively paying for a resort experience you can't fully use.
That's not to say we didn't enjoy our stay, we did, but it's an important consideration if pools and water attractions are high on your family's wish list.
My honest advice would be to compare the total package cost against how much time you'll realistically spend using the facilities. If you're visiting in peak season, it's likely to be excellent value. If you're travelling in the cooler months, it's worth thinking carefully about whether you'll get your money's worth.
It's also well worth weighing it up against other family resorts in the area before you commit. For a direct comparison, see Holiday World Polynesia vs Hotel Riu Costa del Sol: Which Is Better for Families?, where we break down which resort offers the best value depending on your priorities.
What We Loved
Looking back on our stay, there was plenty to love about Holiday World Polynesia:
The unique and fun Polynesian theme
The huge, spacious family rooms
The private hot tub on our balcony
The excellent daytime and evening entertainment programme
The genuinely family-focused atmosphere
The wide variety of on-site facilities
The helpful, friendly staff
The easy 20-minute airport transfer
What We'd Change
No hotel is perfect, and there were a few things that would have improved our stay, particularly visiting in October (outside the weather!):
Opening more of the water facilities during October half term
Heating the outdoor pools for cooler-season stays
Clearer communication about seasonal closures before booking
More buffet variety for families staying a week or longer
Lower parking costs for guests hiring a car
Most of these come down to visiting outside peak summer, which is worth keeping in mind when deciding when to book.

Final Verdict: Would We Stay Again?
Yes, but probably not in October.
Holiday World Polynesia is one of the strongest family hotel concepts we've experienced on the Costa del Sol. The Polynesian design is genuinely unique, the family rooms are excellent, and there's no shortage of activities or entertainment to keep children happy from morning until night.
However, our October half term experience was heavily influenced by the cold pools and the seasonal closure of the Beach Club and water attractions. These are two of the biggest reasons families choose this resort, so missing out on them inevitably affected our overall value for money.
If you're travelling during the warmer months, when everything is open and operating, I think Holiday World Polynesia could be a fantastic choice and offer excellent value for families.
For us, the hotel itself was excellent. The timing of our visit simply meant we couldn't enjoy everything it had to offer. Get the timing right, and this is a resort we'd happily return to.
