Having now done it, I can say this: December in Ruka with kids is special — but it’s also very specific. It’s not the same trip you’ll get at any other time of year, and whether it’s “worth it” really depends on what you want from the experience.
For some families, it’s everything you imagine. For others, it can feel intense, expensive, and slightly different from expectations — especially during Christmas week.
This guide is for UK families planning a Lapland trip with kids, trying to decide if visiting over Christmas is the right choice. We’ve pulled together an honest, practical breakdown based on our own experience to help you decide.
We visited as part of a week‑long (Sunday to Sunday) Crystal Ski package over Christmas, combining skiing with all the classic Lapland experiences. Booking as a package made the logistics much simpler, particularly for a first trip with a child.
This guide also includes links to the exact options and tools we used or considered along the way. Some links may be affiliate links, meaning we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. We only ever recommend approaches we found genuinely worked well for our family.
Quick Answer: Is Ruka (Lapland) in December Worth It?
Yes — if you want the full Christmas experience.
December in Ruka delivers real festive magic: snow-covered forests, Santa experiences, and that once‑in‑a‑lifetime “Lapland at Christmas” feeling.
But it’s also:
the most expensive time to go
darker, with limited daylight
more structured around festive experiences
If your priority is Christmas magic, it’s absolutely worth it. If you’re more focused on skiing, value, or flexibility, February can often work better.
Why So Many UK Families Choose Ruka in December
December is peak season in Lapland for one big reason: Christmas.
If your dream is:
A real Christmas atmosphere
Snow‑covered forests
Visiting Santa
Proper winter activities
A once‑in‑a‑lifetime festive experience for your kids
…then December in Ruka absolutely delivers.
We went over Christmas week with Crystal Ski, and the whole resort felt designed around families and festive experiences, with everything set up to make the trip feel memorable from start to finish. Planning a trip to Ruka with kids? Start here: → Crystal Ski Ruka Review

The Christmas Atmosphere: Is It Really That Special?
In a word: yes.
Ruka in December feels:
Calm but festive
Not tacky or over-commercial
Properly wintery and atmospheric
Like a Christmas card brought to life
Everything is covered in snow. The trees look frozen in time. The village is lit beautifully. And because it’s Lapland, the whole Santa experience actually feels… believable.
Our Santa day was one of the highlights of the entire trip.

What Are the Light Levels Like in December?
This is one of the biggest concerns people have.
In December in Ruka:
The sun doesn’t fully rise
You get a few hours of twilight
The rest of the day is dim, not pitch black
Here’s the important bit:
It does NOT feel like you’re in total darkness all day.
It feels more like:
A long sunrise / sunset
Soft, blue-pink light for a few hours
And then a gentle dusk
For us, this actually added to the atmosphere. The floodlit skiing, the glowing trees, the quiet calm — it all felt very magical rather than depressing.
That said, if you:
Want bright blue skies
Or long sunny ski days
…then February half term is a better choice.
(We compare the two properly here: Christmas vs February Half Term in Lapland: Which Is Better?)

Is It Too Cold in December for Kids?
This was our number one worry — and nearly stopped us booking.
We’re a family who really feel the cold. We’ve had ski trips in Italy and France where we’ve had to come inside early because we were freezing.
The surprise? We were absolutely fine in Lapland.
Why?
It’s not very windy
The resort is quite sheltered
And if you dress properly, it’s very manageable
We had snowstorms while we were there, but we were far more comfortable than expected.
Preparation is everything.
