When we first mentioned taking our son to Turkey, most people reacted the same way:

“Turkey… with kids?”
Or, “Isn’t Turkey just an all-inclusive beach holiday?”

It definitely wasn’t the obvious family choice like Spain or Florida. But when I saw photos of the hot air balloons drifting over Cappadocia at sunrise — and from that moment, Turkey shot straight onto my bucket list.

The only problem? We didn’t know anyone who had visited Turkey with children. We had no idea what the logistics would be like, whether it was safe, or even where to start planning. In short, this was one of our first big trips away from the typical all-inclusive holiday. To play it safe, we decided to use a tour company, which made the planning, booking, and research much simpler. Looking back, we’re now much more confident planning and booking trips ourselves, but the tour experience was excellent. If you’re not ready to go DIY, using a reputable tour company is a stress-free, family-friendly option that can still be very cost-competitive.

Fast forward a few months, and after nine days exploring Istanbul, Ephesus, Pamukkale and Cappadocia, it quickly became one of the most unforgettable family trips we’ve ever taken.

We floated over fairy chimneys in a hot air balloon at sunrise. Walked through ancient cities older than anything we’d ever seen. Paddled through warm thermal pools. Explored underground caves. Ate fresh bread and kebabs in colourful markets. And even squeezed in a relaxing beach stop — all under glorious August summer sunshine.

Turkey surprised us in the very best way — and now I genuinely believe it’s one of the best countries in the world to visit with kids during the school summer holidays.

If you’re planning a family holiday to Turkey from the UK and wondering whether it’s worth it, here’s exactly why it works so well for families — plus everything we learned along the way.

Turkey Is Basically One Giant Outdoor Adventure Playground

Some destinations are great for out of this world experiences.
Some are great for beaches.
Some are great for history.

Turkey somehow gives you all three in one trip.

Within just 10–14 days, we:

  • Explored mosques and bazaars in Istanbul

  • Walked through the ancient ruins of Ephesus

  • Paddled in the white thermal pools of Pamukkale

  • Paraglided over surreal landscapes

  • Slept in a cave hotel

  • Floated above Cappadocia in a hot air balloon

  • Found time to relax by the pool in the summer sunshine

There aren’t many places where your child can say, “Today we’re exploring an underground city… and tomorrow we’re flying in a balloon.”

It’s Surprisingly Easy to Travel Around (Even With Kids)

Before we went, I assumed Turkey would feel complicated or chaotic to navigate with a child.

It wasn’t. At all.

In fact, it was easier than many European trips we’ve done.

Here’s why Turkey works really well for families:

  • Cheap and frequent internal flights (although long bus rides are an option if cost is a barrier, but less palatable with kids)

  • Affordable taxis and private transfers

  • Walkable city centres

  • Hotels used to hosting families (and many set up for families of three – big win for us!)

  • Extremely welcoming locals

Kids Actually Enjoy the Sightseeing

This was the biggest surprise.

Normally, “city sightseeing” and “kids” don’t mix well. But Turkey’s sites feel like real-life adventure sets, not boring museums.

Our son loved:

It felt hands-on and immersive and so much variety.

The Bucket List Experiences Are Next Level

Turkey isn’t just “nice.” It’s wow-level memorable.

The kind of experiences your kids talk about for years.

For us, the highlights were:

Cappadocia Hot Air Balloons

Watching the sunrise while floating over fairy chimneys was pure magic — and completely safe for kids over 6.

Paragliding in Pamukkale

Yes… we actually took our child paragliding. And he loved it more than we did.

These are the kinds of unique family adventures you simply can’t do in most destinations.

Turkey Is Great Value for Families

Another huge win: cost.

Compared to many family destinations, Turkey offers incredible value:

  • Affordable food

  • Cheap domestic flights

  • Reasonably priced hotels

  • Low-cost attractions

  • Budget-friendly activities

Even big experiences like balloon rides or paragliding felt achievable when compared to similar activities elsewhere.

Practical Tips for Visiting Turkey With Kids

A few things we wish we’d known beforehand:

  • Internal flights often have 15kg baggage limits

  • Summers are HOT — book hotels with air conditioning

  • Bring comfy walking shoes (lots of exploring!)

  • Pack modest clothing for mosques (a light scarf is needed for women)

  • Carry some cash for small vendors

  • Early starts are common for tours and balloons
