One of the biggest mistakes families make in Costa Rica is trying to see too much. Long driving days, frequent hotel changes and packed schedules can quickly turn an exciting adventure into an exhausting one. We found that focusing on just two destinations — La Fortuna and the beach — gave us the perfect balance of rainforest adventures, wildlife, waterfalls, hot springs and downtime.

For most families, I'd recommend splitting your time between La Fortuna and the beach.

A simple 10-day Costa Rica family itinerary looks like this:

• Days 1–3: La Fortuna (volcanoes, waterfalls, hanging bridges and hot springs)

• Day 4 - 9 : Travel to the beach, beach resort stay with optional excursions

• Day 10: Fly home

This is the exact route we followed during our family trip and it worked brilliantly. We experienced many of Costa Rica's most famous attractions without constantly packing, unpacking and moving hotels.

This is the exact route we followed and, looking back, I wouldn't change much. It gave us the perfect mix of rainforest adventures, wildlife, waterfalls, hot springs and beach time, without feeling like we were constantly on the move.

Day 1: Arrive in Costa Rica and Drive to La Fortuna

We arrived around lunchtime, which I'd highly recommend when travelling with kids. It gave us plenty of daylight to get our bearings, collect the hire car and make the journey to La Fortuna without feeling rushed.

We used Trip.com to compare car hire prices before booking and found it a useful way to check different suppliers and pickup locations. Before leaving the airport, we also activated an Airalo eSIM so we could use Google Maps throughout the trip without worrying about roaming charges.

The drive itself was far less intimidating than I'd expected. Roads were generally in good condition near the airport, becoming narrower and more rural as we approached La Fortuna. Driving in daylight was the key.

After arriving in La Fortuna, we checked into Hotel Los Lagos, which would become one of the biggest surprises of the trip. The volcano views, pools and hot springs felt like incredible value for money.

Day 2 and 3: La Fortuna: Mistico Hanging Bridges, Waterfalls and Hot Springs

Mistico Hanging Bridges

Our first full day was spent at Mistico Hanging Bridges, one of the activities we were most looking forward to.

We booked the first time slot of the day and I would absolutely recommend doing the same. The trails were quieter, temperatures were cooler and wildlife spotting felt much easier before larger groups arrived.

The hanging bridges themselves were a huge hit with our child. Walking through the rainforest canopy felt adventurous without being too challenging, making it a great choice for families with school-aged children.

The weather was exactly what you'd expect during Costa Rica's rainy season. We experienced periods of light rain and mist throughout the morning, but it never felt disruptive enough to ruin the experience.

Heavy rainfall later in the day meant our planned waterfall visit was cancelled, so we headed back to Los Lagos and spent the afternoon in the hot springs instead.

Honestly, this ended up being one of our favourite afternoons of the whole trip.

La Fortuna Waterfall

La Fortuna Waterfall was one of the highlights of our time in Costa Rica and a place I'd happily recommend to other families.

The waterfall plunges around 70 metres into a natural pool surrounded by rainforest, and unlike many waterfalls, you can actually swim here. The walk down was manageable, even with children, and being able to cool off beneath the waterfall made it feel much more memorable than simply viewing it from a lookout point. For us, it was one of those classic Costa Rica experiences that combined nature, adventure and a sense of achievement without needing a full-day tour.

One thing Costa Rica taught us is that rainy season doesn't mean constant rain. We experienced several heavy showers during our stay, but we also had plenty of sunshine and outdoor time. A Surprise Highlight: Los Lagos Hot Springs

One of the biggest surprises of our Costa Rica itinerary was Hotel Los Lagos. We booked it mainly because it was affordable and well located for exploring La Fortuna, but it ended up being one of our favourite stays.

The real highlight was the network of included hot springs and pools spread throughout the resort. After a morning exploring waterfalls and hanging bridges, it was the perfect place to relax while still feeling immersed in the rainforest surroundings.

It was also a huge hit with Joshua our 7 year old son, who spent most of his time moving between the slides and pools before ordering another mocktail served inside a fresh pineapple. It sounds like a small detail, but those pineapple drinks quickly became one of his favourite memories from Costa Rica.

For a hotel that cost us around £122 for two nights, it felt like exceptional value and added a level of relaxation that balanced the more active parts of our La Fortuna itinerary perfectly.

If you want to add more time onto your La Fortuna leg, I'd seriously consider adding an extra day or two. We only scratched the surface of what there is to do, and it's easily the most activity-packed destination on this itinerary.

Alongside the hanging bridges and waterfall, families can also try:

Day 4 - 9: Travel from La Fortuna to the Beach

One of the reasons this itinerary works so well is that there is only one major transfer during the entire trip. After checking out of Los Lagos, we drove back towards the airport area, returned our hire car and took an Uber to our beach resort. From that point onwards, we didn't need a car.

This instantly made the second half of the holiday feel more relaxed. No navigation. No parking. No driving. Just beach time and downtime.

For the final half of our Costa Rica family itinerary, we stayed at Planet Hollywood Costa Rica. After several active days exploring La Fortuna, this felt like the perfect contrast.

Most days followed a very simple rhythm:

• Pool time

• Beach time

• Monkey spotting around the resort

• Good food

• Kids' club

• Occasional excursions

• Plenty of downtime

One of the biggest lessons we learnt from travelling with children is that holidays don't need to be packed with activities every day. Some of our favourite family memories came from slower days with no schedule at all. We deliberately chose an all-inclusive resort because it removed a lot of the daily planning and spending decisions.

Day 10: Fly Home

Our itinerary continued on to New York, but if Costa Rica is your final destination, Day 10 would simply be your journey home. Because we'd spent the last few days relaxing at the beach, nobody felt exhausted by the end of the trip. That balance is one of the biggest reasons I'd recommend this route to families.

Looking back, several things made this route particularly successful.

Only Two Hotels

Packing and unpacking every few days gets tiring quickly with children. By staying in just two locations, everything felt much more relaxed.

Limited Driving

Driving in Costa Rica is manageable, but long transfer days can become draining. This route keeps the major driving to a minimum while still allowing you to experience two very different sides of the country.

Adventure First, Relaxation Second

La Fortuna gives you:

• Beach time

Flexibility During Rainy Season

Because we stayed multiple nights in La Fortuna, we could easily adjust plans around the weather. This flexibility proved invaluable when the waterfall closed temporarily due to heavy rain.

How Much Does This 10-Day Costa Rica Itinerary Cost?

One of the things we liked most about this itinerary is that it can be adapted to suit different budgets. We mixed a very affordable stay in La Fortuna with a more expensive all-inclusive beach resort, giving us a balance of adventure and relaxation without feeling like every part of the trip was a splurge.

For our family of three, this 10-day Costa Rica itinerary cost approximately £1,220 per person excluding international flights. Once UK return flights were included, the total came to around £2,220 per person during the school holidays.

Is 10 Days Enough in Costa Rica with Kids?

For most families, I think 10 days is a fantastic introduction to Costa Rica. It gave us enough time to experience volcanoes, waterfalls, rainforest, wildlife and beach time without feeling rushed. That said, if we'd been visiting Costa Rica as a standalone holiday, we would absolutely have stayed longer — most likely in La Fortuna, where there was still so much we wanted to do with kids.

The only reason we limited Costa Rica to 10 days was because it formed part of a much bigger family adventure. Before arriving, we'd already spent time exploring Colorado and South Dakota, including visiting Mount Rushmore, and after Costa Rica we were heading on to New York. With so much packed into one trip, 10 days was realistically all we could give Costa Rica this time.

Even so, we left feeling like we'd only scratched the surface. There were plenty more wildlife experiences, adventure activities and family-friendly attractions we could have added, which is why Costa Rica is firmly on our list of places we'd love to return to.

If you're visiting Costa Rica with kids for the first time, I'd strongly consider a simple La Fortuna and beach itinerary like this one. It allowed us to experience volcanoes, waterfalls, rainforest wildlife, hot springs and beach time without spending our entire holiday in the car.

Most importantly, it felt manageable. Costa Rica is one of those destinations where it's easy to overcomplicate the itinerary. Our advice would be the opposite: slow down, choose fewer locations and spend longer enjoying each one.
