It's one of the most popular attractions in the region and often appears on lists of the best things to do in Costa Rica. The promise of walking through the clouds within the rainforest canopy, spotting wildlife and crossing giant hanging bridges sounds incredible, but is it actually worth the time and money when travelling with children?

We visited with our 7-year-old son Joshua during our Costa Rica family trip and, even with light rain for most of the morning, it ended up being one of our favourite experiences in La Fortuna.

Quick Answer: Is Mistico Hanging Bridges Worth It with Kids?

Yes — absolutely. For families with children, Mistico Hanging Bridges is one of the best things to do in La Fortuna. The walking is relatively easy, the rainforest scenery is stunning and the bridges make the experience feel like a real jungle adventure.

We booked the first 8am entry slot, which I would highly recommend. The trails were incredibly quiet, wildlife was easier to spot and for much of the walk it felt like we had the rainforest to ourselves.

Allow around 2–3 hours, although you probably won't be walking the entire time. Much of the experience is stopping to look at wildlife, admire the views and enjoy the rainforest atmosphere.

What Are the Mistico Hanging Bridges?

Mistico Hanging Bridges is a privately managed nature park located just outside La Fortuna.

The attraction combines rainforest walking trails with a series of hanging bridges suspended high above the forest floor. Some people refer to them as "cloud bridges" because at times you're walking through the upper levels of the rainforest canopy with nothing but trees stretching out beneath you.

The route takes visitors through:

• Rainforest trails

• Hanging bridges

• Wildlife habitats

• Scenic viewpoints

• River crossings

The bridges are incredibly well maintained and felt very safe throughout our visit. One of the things I liked most was that it feels like a genuine rainforest experience rather than a theme park attraction.

Our Experience Visiting with Kids

We stayed nearby at Hotel Los Lagos, which made getting to Mistico Hanging Bridges very easy. The drive took around 25 minutes, and because we'd booked the first 8am slot, we arrived before most of the crowds.

That turned out to be one of the best decisions we made in Costa Rica. The trails were incredibly quiet and the rainforest felt peaceful and almost untouched. We had light misty rain for much of the walk, but if anything it added to the atmosphere rather than spoiling it.

Joshua loved the bridges from the moment we stepped onto the first one. There was something about walking high above the trees that made it feel much more exciting than a standard nature walk.

Most importantly, it always felt safe. The bridges are sturdy, enclosed and professionally maintained. At no point did we feel worried about Joshua crossing them.

How Long Does Mistico Hanging Bridges Take?

For most families, I'd allow 2–3 hours for the full experience.

Technically, you could complete the route more quickly, but I think you'd miss the best parts. Mistico isn't really about covering distance or rushing from one bridge to the next. It's about slowing down, listening to the rainforest, spotting wildlife and enjoying views from the canopy.

We spent a lot of time stopping along the way to listen to birds, look for wildlife and take photos from the bridges. Joshua never felt bored, and because the scenery changes throughout the walk, it never felt repetitive.

The pace worked really well for our family. We weren't constantly walking, but equally we never felt like we were hanging around waiting for the next interesting thing to happen.

Is Mistico Hanging Bridges Easy for Kids?

Yes, much easier than I expected.

Before visiting, I had imagined something closer to a proper hike, but the reality was far more family-friendly. The trails are well maintained, clearly marked and mostly easy to follow, with only a few steeper sections along the route.

Most children should have no problem completing the circuit, particularly school-aged kids. Joshua was 7 when we visited and comfortably managed the entire walk without complaints.

The bridges themselves are high, but they felt sturdy and secure throughout. In fact, they quickly became Joshua's favourite part of the experience.

The only families I would hesitate to recommend it to are those using pushchairs or strollers. Some sections would be awkward to navigate, and there are areas where carrying a buggy would become frustrating.

For families with children, though, Mistico strikes a brilliant balance between adventure and accessibility.

How Much Does Mistico Hanging Bridges Cost?

Mistico isn't the cheapest activity in La Fortuna, but we felt it offered good value for what you get. Self-guided tickets are typically around £30 per person, while guided tours cost more depending on the package you choose.

For us, the cost felt justified because you're getting:

• Several hours in the rainforest

• Multiple hanging bridges

• Excellent walking trails

• Wildlife spotting opportunities

• Some of the best views in the La Fortuna area

What If You Don't Like Heights?

This is probably the biggest thing to think about before booking.

The good news is that I never felt unsafe, and at no point was I concerned about Joshua. The bridges are well maintained, enclosed and designed with safety in mind.

The less good news is that if you genuinely dislike heights, this might not be the activity for you.

The hanging bridges are the main attraction and there isn't an alternative route that avoids them completely. If crossing high bridges sounds unpleasant rather than exciting, you're unlikely to enjoy the experience.

That said, it isn't one giant bridge after another. The route alternates between forest trails and hanging bridges, so you spend a lot of time walking on solid ground. For many people, the anticipation is actually worse than the reality.

Do You Need a Guide?

Personally, I don't think so.

We completed the walk independently and never once felt like we were missing out. The trails are clearly marked, easy to follow and there is very little chance of getting lost.

One of the biggest advantages of visiting without a guide is being able to explore at your own pace. We could stop whenever we wanted, spend longer on the bridges Joshua enjoyed most and move on quickly when something didn't hold our attention.

A guide will almost certainly help you spot more wildlife, particularly sloths, birds and insects that are easy to overlook. If wildlife photography is a priority, a guide may be worth considering.

For most families, however, I think the self-guided option offers more flexibility and better value.

What Wildlife Can You See?

Wildlife spotting is one of the main reasons people visit Mistico Hanging Bridges.

It's possible to see:

• Monkeys

• Sloths

• Frogs

• Lizards

• Birds

• Insects

So what did we actually see? If I'm being completely honest, mostly the less exciting wildlife. We spotted several frogs, lizards, birds and plenty of insects, and we spent much of the morning listening to sounds coming from the rainforest around us.

Did we see monkeys or sloths? No.

But equally, we weren't scanning every tree branch or actively searching for animals the entire time.

I think it's important to set realistic expectations. Mistico isn't a zoo, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Some families get incredibly lucky and see sloths, monkeys and tropical birds in abundance. Others have a quieter experience.

For us, though, that wasn't really the point. The rainforest itself was the attraction. Walking through the canopy, crossing the bridges and being immersed in the sounds of the jungle felt like the classic Costa Rica experience we'd come looking for, whether we spotted a sloth or not.

Tips for Visiting Mistico Hanging Bridges with Kids

A few things we'd definitely do again:

• Book the earliest entry slot available

• Wear comfortable trainers

• Pack lightweight rain jackets

• Bring drinking water

• Take a few snacks

• Allow at least 2–3 hours

• Use the toilets before starting the route

• Check the weather forecast before visiting

Final Verdict: Is Mistico Hanging Bridges Worth It?

For me, this was one of the reasons I wanted to visit La Fortuna in the first place. Walking through the rainforest canopy, listening to birds, spotting wildlife and crossing the bridges felt like the classic Costa Rica experience I'd imagined before the trip.

Joshua loved the adventure, and having the trails almost completely to ourselves during the early morning slot made it even more memorable.

Would I recommend it to other families? Absolutely.

It isn't the cheapest activity in La Fortuna, but it delivers something genuinely unique and offers a fantastic introduction to Costa Rica's rainforest environment.
