The most popular family itineraries combine La Fortuna, known for its rainforest, waterfalls, volcanoes and hot springs, with a beach destination on the Pacific Coast. Families with more time might also add destinations such as Manuel Antonio or Monteverde, each offering a slightly different experience.

Because these areas are spread across the country, the more destinations you add, the more travel time you'll need to factor in. That's why I generally recommend focusing on a small number of locations rather than trying to see everything in one trip.

For most families:

• 7 days → Enough for La Fortuna and one beach destination

• 10 days → A better balance of rainforest, wildlife and beach time

• 14+ days → Add another destination or travel at a slower pace

• Less than 7 days → Possible, but can feel rushed once flights and travel days are included

We spent 10 days in Costa Rica as part of a wider USA trip. Looking back, it gave us enough time to experience the highlights without feeling like we were constantly packing and moving hotels, while still leaving plenty of reasons to return.

In this guide, I'll break down how many nights I'd recommend in each area, the itineraries I'd suggest for families and what I'd change if I had more—or less—time available.

Which Parts of Costa Rica Do Families Usually Visit?

One of the biggest factors when deciding how long to spend in Costa Rica is understanding how many different regions there are to choose from.

Most family itineraries combine at least two areas because each offers something completely different. La Fortuna is the most popular inland destination, known for its rainforest, waterfalls, volcano views, wildlife and hot springs. It's where many families get the classic Costa Rica adventure experience.

The other popular choice is the Pacific Coast, where you'll find beaches, family resorts, wildlife and a slower pace of travel. This is where many families choose to finish their holiday and relax after a few active days exploring inland.

If you have longer than 10 days, many families also add destinations such as Manuel Antonio, famous for beaches and wildlife, or Monteverde, known for cloud forests and nature experiences.

The more destinations you add, the more travel time you'll need to allow between them. That's why most first-time family visitors find that combining La Fortuna and one beach destination gives them the best balance of adventure, relaxation and manageable travel times.

A Simple 7-Day Costa Rica Family Itinerary

If you only have a week, I'd keep things simple.

• 3 nights in La Fortuna

• 3 nights at the beach

• 1 travel day

You'll experience the rainforest, waterfalls and hot springs while still having time to relax before heading home.

A Simple 10-Day Costa Rica Family Itinerary

This is close to the itinerary we followed.

• 2–3 nights in La Fortuna

• 5–6 nights at the beach

• Travel days between destinations

For most first-time visitors, I think this is the sweet spot. You get the wildlife, rainforest and volcano experiences that make Costa Rica special, while still having enough beach time to relax.

A Simple 14-Day Costa Rica Family Itinerary

If you have two weeks, this is where you can start exploring more of Costa Rica rather than simply seeing the highlights.

A typical family itinerary might look like:

• 3 nights in La Fortuna for hanging bridges, zip lining and hot springs

• 3 nights in Monteverde for cloud forests and wildlife

• 3 nights in Manuel Antonio for beaches and national park wildlife

• 4–5 nights at the beach

Alternatively, you could add destinations such as the Nicoya Peninsula, Tortuguero or simply spend longer relaxing at each stop.

Personally, I wouldn't use the extra time to add lots of destinations. I'd use it to slow down. Families often underestimate how valuable downtime becomes once you've spent several days exploring waterfalls, rainforest trails and wildlife parks.

Why We Chose 10 Days

Our Costa Rica trip actually formed part of a larger USA itinerary, so we didn't have unlimited time. That said, even if Costa Rica had been a standalone holiday, I think we would have chosen something very similar.

We wanted:

• Enough time to experience both rainforest and beach

• A balance of adventure and relaxation

• Minimal hotel changes

• Plenty of downtime for Joshua

• A trip that felt exciting rather than exhausting

Ten days allowed us to do all of that. Could we have stayed longer? Absolutely.

Did we feel rushed? Not at all.

Why We Included La Fortuna in Our Costa Rica Itinerary

If you're planning a Costa Rica family holiday, I think La Fortuna is one of the easiest places to justify adding to your itinerary.

While Costa Rica has beautiful beaches, La Fortuna offers many of the experiences that make the country unique. This is where you'll find rainforest trails, waterfalls, hot springs, volcano views, wildlife and family-friendly adventure activities all within a relatively small area.

For us, it provided the perfect contrast to the beach portion of our trip. We spent our days exploring places like Mistico Hanging Bridges and La Fortuna Waterfall, before returning to the hot springs at our hotel. It felt adventurous without being exhausting and gave us the authentic Costa Rica experience we were looking for.

Another reason La Fortuna works so well for families is that most attractions are within a 15–30 minute drive of each other. That means less time travelling and more time actually enjoying the destination.

Why Include a Beach Stay in Your Costa Rica Family Itinerary?

While La Fortuna gave us the adventure side of Costa Rica, the beach gave us a chance to slow down and actually enjoy some downtime.

After days spent exploring waterfalls, hot springs, rainforest trails and wildlife, we found it was the perfect contrast. The beach portion of our trip was all about pool days, spotting monkeys in the trees, relaxing by the ocean and not feeling the need to rush off to another attraction every morning.

I think this combination is what makes Costa Rica such a great family destination. You don't have to choose between adventure and relaxation—you can have both in the same holiday. Our few days in La Fortuna felt exciting and memorable, while the beach gave us time to recover and enjoy a more traditional family holiday afterwards.

Looking back, I wouldn't have wanted less time and I don't think we needed more to enjoy our first visit. If you're planning a family trip and wondering how long to stay, I'd aim for 10 days if possible, with 2–3 nights in La Fortuna and the rest of your time spent on the coast.

It's long enough to see what makes Costa Rica special, but short enough that the trip never feels exhausting.
