Working out what a Costa del Sol family holiday actually costs is harder than it should be. Package prices hide the extras, and most guides quote vague estimates rather than real numbers.
We've now visited twice with our son Joshua, once for 10 days in summer and once for 7 days over October half term. This guide shares exactly what we spent on flights, accommodation, car hire, food and day trips, plus realistic budgets for 7, 10 and 14 day trips.

Quick Answer: How Much Should Families Budget for a DIY Costa del Sol Holiday?
As a rough guide, I'd budget £600 to £1,200 per person for a week, based on our own trips.
The lower end assumes shoulder season travel, a self-catering apartment or October-rate hotel, and day trips done independently. The upper end covers peak summer flights, an all-inclusive family resort, car hire and several paid excursions.
What actually moves the needle:
When you travel. This is the single biggest factor by a considerable margin. The same hotel cost us roughly three times more in summer than in October half term.
Your accommodation standard. Family suites and themed resorts carry a real premium over a straightforward apartment.
Whether you hire a car. Worth it if you're doing three or more day trips, harder to justify for one or two.
How often you eat out. At £20 to £30 per person per meal, this adds up faster than anything else.
How you do your day trips. Independently or with a guided tour can be a £40 to £50 per person difference on the same excursion.
Full breakdown of what we actually spent below.

How Much Are Flights to Malaga?
Flights typically cost between £200-300 from the UK to Malaga during the school holidays, expect to pay the higher end over Summer. This is reflective of a low cost carrier, we used Easyjet.
A few things that affect this significantly:
School holiday impact. This is the single biggest factor. Flying during summer or half term can easily double what you'd pay in term time. It's unavoidable if you have school-age children, but worth knowing so you're not surprised.
Budget versus full-service. easyJet, Ryanair and Jet2 all fly to Malaga from most UK airports. Budget fares look cheaper upfront, but once you add hold luggage, seat selection and any extras, the gap narrows.
Baggage costs. Factor these in properly. Hold bags for a family of three add up quickly, and for a week-long holiday you'll almost certainly need at least one or two.
Departure airport. Regional airports sometimes work out cheaper, though flight times can be less convenient.
My advice: book early. There's plenty of choice into Malaga, but the best prices and sensible departure times go first. You can use sites like Trip.com for price comparisons between airlines.

How Much Does Accommodation Cost on the Costa del Sol?
This is where the season makes the biggest difference, and the numbers genuinely surprised me.
Using the two hotels we stayed at as examples with 2027 prices, for a family of three:
Summer: around £2,700 for a week
October half term: around £1,700 for a week
Summer: around £3,000 for a week
October half term: around £1,000 for a week
That's a staggering difference. October half term worked out at roughly a third of the summer price at Polynesia.
Of course, you're not getting the same experience. In October the outdoor pools were unheated and too cold to enjoy, and the Beach Club was closed for the season. You're paying less because you're getting less.

How Much Should You Budget for Food and Drink?
This depends enormously on your board basis.
If You're All-Inclusive
Your day-to-day food costs drop dramatically. We still spent money on ice creams, coffees and the occasional meal out on day trips, but nothing like what we'd have spent otherwise.
Where all-inclusive falls down is day trips. If you're out for the day, you're paying for lunch on top of food you've already bought at the hotel.
If You're Eating Out
Budget £20 to £30 per person per meal. That covers a main, sometimes a dessert, water for the table and soft drinks.
A few honest observations:
Water for the table adds up. It's rarely free and it's a cost most people forget.
Soft drinks are pricey, particularly at tourist spots.
Ice cream and churros became a daily habit. Budget around £3 to £5 per person each time. These were actually pretty good value!
Older children cost more. Joshua now eats a full adult meal, which has visibly increased our food spend compared to previous trips.
Supermarket Savings
Using supermarkets for water, snacks and breakfast items genuinely saves money, particularly if you're self-catering or heading out for the day. We always picked up water and snacks before day trips rather than buying at attractions.

How Much Is Car Hire and Transport?
We paid £250 for 10 days of car hire, which I thought was reasonable.
On top of that, factor in:
Fuel. Not huge, but the day trips add up. Ronda and Gibraltar are both 1.5 to 2 hours each way.
Parking. This is the one that catches people out. Many hotels charge for parking, sometimes upwards of €15 per night, which adds up considerably across a week. Always check before booking.
City parking. Malaga city parking is expensive, which is why we'd recommend the train instead if you're staying in Torremolinos or Benalmádena.
Taxis and transfers. If you skip the car, budget for airport transfers and the occasional taxi. For us, the car worked out better value once we'd factored in multiple day trips.

How Much Do Day Trips Cost?
This is where you have the most control over your budget. Here's what we actually spent.
Ronda
Any where from £10 - £50 per person.
It depends how much you spend on lunch out, coffees and milkshakes, ice creams, churros!
The bulk of our day trip was spent on food. Strip out the eating and Ronda can genuinely be done on a shoestring at around €15 per person for the Casa del Rey Moro water mine and the gorge walkway which would be the main paid for sites I would recommend for families.
See Is Ronda Worth Visiting With Kids? for the full breakdown of the sites we recommend and their costs.
Gibraltar
£50 to £100 per person, depending on whether you take a tour and whether you eat out.
The big variable is the taxi tour, which runs around £40 to £50 per person including entry to the Upper Rock attractions. Do it independently and you'll pay considerably less, though with the cable car closed until 2027, that's harder than it used to be.
See Gibraltar With Kids: Is It Worth the Day Trip From Spain? for a deeper look at this day trip.
Caminito del Rey
Genuinely the best value activity we did.
Tickets are just €10 per person, plus €2.50 for the shuttle bus.
We chose to stay overnight nearby, which cost £125 for the hotel, but that's optional. You can absolutely do it as a day trip from the coast.

Guadalmina River Canyoning, Benahavís
£40 per person, pre-booked through GetYourGuide.
For a half-day guided activity with all equipment included, I thought that was excellent value. It was also one of the highlights of our trip.

Malaga Segway Tour
A mid-range activity at £35, charged per person. It saved a lot of tired legs and turned sightseeing into something Joshua actually enjoyed, we booked via Viator.

What Does a Costa del Sol Family Holiday Cost by Trip Length?
These are per-person estimates based on what we actually spent, then scaled up so you can see the total for your family. All figures exclude spending money and souvenirs.
What Each Tier Actually Includes
Budget assumes shoulder season or half term flights, a self-catering apartment or October-rate hotel, no car hire, mostly self-catering with a few meals out, and two or three day trips done independently.
Mid-range assumes school holiday flights, an all-inclusive family hotel, car hire for the trip, eating out on day trips, and three or four excursions. This is closest to what we did in October.
Higher-cost assumes peak summer flights, an upgraded family suite (potentially with a private hot tub), car hire plus paid hotel parking, several guided tours and regular meals out.
Why 10 Days Often Works Out Better Value
Notice the per-person cost doesn't scale evenly. Flights, transfers and booking fees are fixed regardless of how long you stay, so a 10-day trip spreads those costs further than a week does.
Fourteen days is where accommodation starts to dominate, and in my honest opinion you can see everything worth seeing in ten. If you're choosing purely on value, 10 days is the sweet spot.

Caminito del Rey Gorge Walk
Caminito del Rey Day Trip
Where Does the Costa del Sol Offer Good Value?
Day trip activities. Caminito del Rey at €10 per person is remarkable value for what it is.
DIY excursions. Gibraltar and Ronda can both be done independently for a fraction of the tour price.
Self-catering options. Widely available and often better value than all-inclusive outside peak season.
Free experiences. Beaches, promenades, viewpoints and wandering old towns cost nothing.
Public transport. The Cercanías train line is genuinely cheap and connects the main resorts to Malaga city.
Shoulder season accommodation. October rates at a third of summer prices are hard to argue with.
Position for day trips. Everything worth seeing is within a two-hour drive, so you don't need to relocate.
Where Do Costs Creep Up?
School holiday flights. Unavoidable with school-age children, but the biggest single premium you'll pay.
Hotel upgrades. Family suites and rooms with hot tubs carry a significant markup.
Hotel parking. Often €15 per night and easy to overlook when comparing prices.
Multiple paid excursions. Three or four guided tours adds up fast for a family.
Eating out daily. At £20 to £30 per person per meal, this is the fastest way to blow a budget.
Attraction extras. Bowling, mini golf and spa access at hotels often carry additional charges.
Drinks and ice creams. Small individually, significant across a fortnight.

How Can You Save Money on a Costa del Sol Family Holiday?
Consider the shoulder season if if you are't wed to Summer. Our October accommodation was a third of the summer price. Just go in knowing the pools may be too cold and some facilities closed. See Spain in October Half Term With Kids: Is It Worth It?
Book accommodation early. Particularly for school holidays, when the best-value family rooms go first.
Do day trips independently. Gibraltar and Ronda are both easy to do yourself with a car, saving £40 to £50 per person on tour costs.
Don't overbook paid attractions. Two or three across a week is plenty. Any more and you'll spend the holiday in the car anyway.
Use supermarkets. Water, snacks and breakfast items bought locally cost a fraction of hotel or attraction prices.
Compare car hire against taxis honestly. If you're only doing one or two trips, transfers may work out cheaper. If you're doing three or more, the car wins.
Check parking costs before booking a hotel. €15 a night across a week is over £90 you hadn't planned for.

Final Verdict: Is the Costa del Sol Expensive for Families?
Honestly, no, not compared to many family destinations.
The flights are short and reasonably priced, the day trips are genuinely affordable if you do them independently, and there's plenty you can enjoy for free.
Where it becomes expensive is accommodation during school holidays. That's the cost that dominates everything else, and it's largely outside your control if you have school-age children.
Our biggest takeaway is that when you travel matters more than anything else. The same hotel cost us three times as much in summer as it did in October. The trade-off is weather and facilities, but if you're flexible and happy to prioritise day trips over pool time, the savings are substantial.
For us, the best value came from the day trips rather than the hotel. Caminito del Rey at €10 per person, canyoning at £40 and Ronda for €15 in entry fees delivered far more memorable experiences than an expensive room ever could.

FAQs About Costa del Sol Family Holiday Costs
Is Malaga Cheaper Than Other Parts of Spain?
Broadly, yes. The Costa del Sol is generally better value than the Balearics or Barcelona, largely due to the volume of competition and the sheer number of flights. Inland towns like Ronda are cheaper still than the coastal resorts.
How Much Spending Money Do Families Need?
If you're all-inclusive, I'd budget around £40 to £60 per day for a family of three to cover ice creams, coffees, souvenirs and the occasional lunch out. If you're eating out, closer to £100 per day.
Is All-Inclusive Worth It in Malaga?
In summer, usually yes, particularly if you'll actually use the pools and facilities. In October, we'd say no. We couldn't use the cold pools, the Beach Club was closed, and we'd have got better value from self-catering with a heated pool as a base for day trips.
Is Car Hire Expensive in Malaga?
Not particularly. We paid £250 for 10 days, which felt fair. The hidden cost is parking, both at hotels and in Malaga city. Always check whether your hotel charges before assuming it's included.
Are Day Trips Worth the Extra Cost?
Absolutely, and they were the best part of our trip. Caminito del Rey at €10 per person is exceptional value. The key is doing them independently where possible rather than booking guided tours for everything, which can easily add £40 to £50 per person per trip.
