If you're planning a La Fortuna family itinerary and wondering how many days you need, this is one of the best places to start in Costa Rica.
La Fortuna packs in so many of the experiences families imagine when they think about Costa Rica — volcano views, waterfalls, hanging bridges, rainforest wildlife, hot springs and adventure activities — but without spending hours driving between attractions. That's what makes it such a great fit for families with kids.

This is the exact approach we'd take if we returned. We visited La Fortuna with our 7-year-old son Joshua as part of a wider Costa Rica trip and loved the balance of adventure and downtime, but with an extra day we would have added another activity and spent even longer enjoying the volcano views, hot springs and rainforest.

Why La Fortuna Works So Well for Families
La Fortuna is one of the easiest destinations in Costa Rica to visit with children.
Unlike some parts of the country, you don't need to spend half your holiday driving between attractions. Most of the major highlights are within 10–30 minutes of each other, making it easy to enjoy active mornings followed by more relaxed afternoons.
It's particularly well suited to children because there are plenty of activities that feel adventurous without being exhausting.

Where We Stayed in La Fortuna
We stayed at Hotel Los Lagos, and it ended up being one of the biggest surprises of the whole trip.
The rooms were fairly simple, but the grounds were fantastic. There were multiple pools, waterslides, tropical gardens, volcano views and, most importantly, a huge network of hot springs included in the stay.
After busy mornings exploring waterfalls and hanging bridges, returning to the hot springs was the perfect way to slow things down.
Joshua spent hours moving between the pools and slides while we enjoyed the warm springs, and it quickly became one of our favourite parts of the trip. The pineapple mocktails were also a huge hit and became a daily holiday tradition.
For a hotel that cost us around £122 for two nights, it felt exceptional value.

Day 0: Arrive and Travel to La Fortuna
We flew into Liberia Airport, collected our hire car and drove directly to La Fortuna.
Allow around:
3–4 hours from Liberia Airport
2.5–3 hours from San José Airport
including comfort breaks.
We used Trip.com to compare car hire prices before booking and found it useful for checking multiple suppliers in one place. We also used an Airalo eSIM throughout the trip, which meant Google Maps worked perfectly without worrying about roaming charges.
Driving around La Fortuna was much easier than we'd expected. Roads near the town were generally good, and activities were close together, so our days never felt dominated by travel.

Day 1: Mistico Hanging Bridges, La Fortuna Waterfall and Hot Springs
Start early, breakfast included at the hotel. This was probably our favourite day in La Fortuna and the perfect introduction to Costa Rica.
Morning: Mistico Hanging Bridges
We booked the first 8am slot and I'd strongly recommend doing the same. The trails were quieter, temperatures were cooler and wildlife spotting felt much easier before tour groups arrived. We felt like we had the park almost to ourselves!
Walking above the rainforest canopy was one of those classic Costa Rica experiences that felt adventurous without being too challenging for children.

Late Morning: La Fortuna Waterfall
Next, head to La Fortuna Waterfall. The waterfall drops around 70 metres into a natural swimming area surrounded by rainforest and is one of the most famous attractions in Costa Rica.
The walk down was manageable, even with children, and swimming beneath the waterfall made the visit feel much more memorable than simply viewing it from a lookout point.
For us, it was one of those experiences that perfectly captures Costa Rica.

Afternoon: Hot Springs and Volcano Views
After a busy morning, spend the afternoon back at your hotel.
This is where staying somewhere like Hotel Los Lagos really pays off. We spent the afternoon moving between the hot springs and pools, taking in views towards Arenal Volcano and enjoying pineapple cocktails and mocktails from the bar.
Joshua loved the slides and spent hours moving between the different pools, while we appreciated having a chance to slow the pace down after a busy morning exploring.
Day 2: Zip Lining and Adventure Day
If there is one extra activity I'd add with a third day in La Fortuna, it would be zip lining. This is one of the most famous adventure activities in Costa Rica and a great option for older children who enjoy a little adrenaline.
You'll soar above rainforest canopy, waterfalls and valleys while taking in views of Arenal Volcano. The combination of adventure and scenery makes it very different from theme park-style zip lines.

Day 3: Hot Springs, Relaxation and Travel Onwards
On your final morning, slow the pace down. One thing we learnt on this trip is that not every day needs to be packed with activities.
Use the morning to:
Enjoy the hotel pools
Have one final soak in the hot springs
Take in the volcano views
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast
From here, most families will either:
Continue to the beach
Return to San José
Continue to another region of Costa Rica

For our family, Los Lagos offered excellent value because the hot springs, pools and breakfast were included. Activities such as Mistico Hanging Bridges and La Fortuna Waterfall were also reasonably priced compared with many organised tours.

Final Thoughts: Is 3 Days in La Fortuna Too Much?
Not at all. In fact, if we returned to Costa Rica, we'd probably spend longer here.
Three days gives you enough time to enjoy the area's biggest highlights without rushing from place to place, while still leaving room for downtime in the hot springs and around the pool.
For families visiting Costa Rica for the first time, I'd argue La Fortuna is one of the destinations most deserving of extra time. The combination of volcanoes, waterfalls, wildlife, rainforest and adventure activities makes it one of the easiest places in Costa Rica to keep both children and adults happy.
