When searching for a family hotel in Phuket with a water park, Splash Beach Resort Phuket will almost certainly appear near the top of the list.

Quick Answer: Is Splash Beach Resort, Mai Khao Worth It?

Potentially, but only if the Splash Jungle Water Park is fully open and operating during your stay.

It depends. Splash Beach Resort has many of the features families look for in a Phuket hotel, including large rooms, multiple swimming pools, beachfront access and an on-site water park. However, our experience was mixed.

The location near the airport was convenient, the main pool area worked well for families, and Joshua enjoyed some of the activities on offer. However, the resort felt more tired and less well maintained than we expected, service was inconsistent, and several practical issues throughout our stay detracted from the overall experience.

The biggest disappointment was that the Splash Jungle Water Park, which was a key reason we booked, was closed after we'd made our reservation. That inevitably affected our view of the hotel, but it wasn't the only issue. Even setting the water park aside, I don't think the resort delivered the level of value or quality I expected based on the price and marketing.

This review explains what worked well, what didn't, and whether I'd recommend Splash Beach Resort Phuket to other families considering a stay.

Why We Booked Splash Beach Resort Phuket

After spending several nights in the south of the island at Villa Zolitude, we deliberately wanted to finish our Phuket stay somewhere that would appeal more directly to Joshua.

The plan was simple: after a quieter private pool villa experience, we'd move somewhere with larger pools, a beach, family facilities and, most importantly, a water park.

On paper, Splash Beach Resort ticked every box. It sits directly on Mai Khao Beach, offers family rooms and villas, multiple swimming pools and is home to Splash Jungle Water Park, one of the best-known water parks in Phuket.

For families researching Phuket accommodation, it's easy to see why this hotel is so popular.

Unfortunately, shortly after we booked, we were informed that the water park would be closed for maintenance during our stay. The closure covered a significant part of the summer holiday period, which was frustrating given that the water park was the main reason we had chosen the resort in the first place.

The hotel did offer meal vouchers as compensation, but they refused to reduce the cost of the stay or provide a refund. In the end, we raised the issue with Booking.com, arguing that a key advertised facility would not be available during our stay. After several rounds of communication and providing supporting evidence, we eventually secured around £200 in compensation.

I think there are two lessons here.

First, if you're booking Splash Beach Resort primarily for the water park, it's worth confirming its operating status before travelling, even if it appears available when you make your reservation.

Second, if a hotel substantially changes the facilities available after booking and refuses to offer a reasonable solution, it may be worth speaking to the booking platform you used. In our case, Booking.com ultimately stepped in where the hotel would not.

What's important to say, though, is that the water park closure wasn't the only factor influencing our review. There were also maintenance issues, service inconsistencies and other practical frustrations that affected our overall impression of the resort. The closure simply amplified those issues because it removed the feature that had originally justified the price and location for us.

Should Families Book Splash Beach Resort Phuket?

In theory, it's easy to recommend.

The resort has many of the ingredients parents look for when searching for a family-friendly Phuket resort:

• Beachfront location

• Multiple swimming pools

• Family accommodation options

• Restaurants and bars on-site

• Close proximity to the airport

• A water park

The problem is that some of those headline attractions have a significant impact on whether the hotel feels good value. For us, the closure of the water park fundamentally changed the experience. The hotel did communicate this, but only after we had already booked. The compensation offered didn't really reflect the fact that the resort's biggest selling point was unavailable.

Location: Great for the Airport, Less Ideal for Exploring Phuket

One genuine advantage of Splash Beach Resort is its location.

The resort sits just 15 minutes from Phuket International Airport, making arrival and departure days incredibly easy. After a long flight, or before an early morning departure, that convenience shouldn't be underestimated.

However, that convenience comes with a trade-off.

Because the resort is located so close to the airport and directly under the flight path, you regularly see and hear aircraft throughout the day. Joshua actually enjoyed watching the planes coming in over Mai Khao Beach, particularly during our first couple of days, but there were definitely times when the noise became noticeable around the pool and beach areas. It wasn't a deal-breaker for us, but it's something I'd want to know before booking.

The other downside is that you're staying in one of the quieter and more remote parts of Phuket.

Outside the resort you'll find:

• A small 7-Eleven

• A handful of local restaurants

• Mai Khao Beach

But that's about it.

If you're hoping to explore Phuket Old Town, Patong, Kata, Karon or spend your evenings wandering around markets and restaurants, you'll be doing a fair amount of travelling. Unlike some of Phuket's more established tourist areas, this isn't the kind of location where you can simply walk out of the hotel and find plenty to do.

That said, the location worked well for some activities. We used it as a base for our Elephant Sanctuary & Bamboo Rafting Tour, and being in the north of the island reduced some of the transfer times.

Overall, I'd describe the location as convenient rather than exciting. It's ideal for airport access and a relaxing beach stay, but less suitable if you want to explore Phuket's main attractions every day.

Service & Practical Issues

This was probably the most frustrating aspect of our stay.

No single issue completely ruined the holiday, but there were enough small frustrations that they gradually chipped away at the overall experience. Individually, most were manageable. Collectively, they made the resort feel less polished and less family-friendly than we expected.

One example was the airport transfer situation. Given the hotel's location just 15 minutes from Phuket Airport and references to airport transport, we assumed transfers would be available both ways. In reality, the hotel offered airport pick-up but not a return transfer. It's not a major problem, but it was another thing we unexpectedly had to organise ourselves at the end of the holiday.

When we asked the hotel about transport, the taxi quote provided was considerably more expensive than arranging our own Grab, which is what we ultimately did. In fairness, Grab was quick, reliable and easy to use, but we'd expected the departure transfer to be something the hotel would naturally help facilitate.

There were also several smaller service issues during our stay:

• Having to hand over our room key in exchange for pool towels, which meant you couldn't access your room at the same time.

• The lobby bar closing unexpectedly without any obvious communication to guests.

• Restaurant service that varied considerably depending on the time of day and who was working.

• A promised food discount that wasn't applied correctly and had to be rectified.

• Billing discrepancies during checkout that took around 45 minutes to resolve, which isn't ideal when you're travelling with a child and trying to reach the airport.

• Damaged areas around the pool causing trip hazards

None of these are deal-breakers in isolation, but together they created a feeling that some aspects of the resort weren't being managed as smoothly as they could have been.

What made these issues more noticeable was that they came on top of the water park situation. Had everything else run perfectly, we may have viewed the stay more positively. Instead, the combination of maintenance works, service inconsistencies and operational frustrations made it difficult to overlook the fact that the resort's main selling point was unavailable.

For me, that was the biggest takeaway from Splash Beach Resort. The hotel has many of the ingredients of a great family resort, but during our stay the execution didn't always match the promise.

How Does Splash Beach Resort Compare to Villa Zolitude?

These hotels are trying to deliver completely different family holidays.

Villa Zolitude focuses on privacy, space and unique experiences. The private pool villa, floating lunch and jungle setting encouraged us to slow down and spend time together as a family.

Splash Beach Resort focuses on pools, beach access and family facilities. The appeal is the water park, larger resort atmosphere and having plenty for children to do on-site.

Had the water park been operating, I suspect Joshua would have preferred Splash Beach. The combination of slides, pools and beach access would probably have made it the more exciting hotel from a child's perspective.

As it stood, however, Villa Zolitude delivered more consistently on what it promised. The facilities were available, the service was more reliable and the overall experience matched our expectations.

That's not necessarily because it's a better hotel. It's because everything we booked was actually available and worked as advertised.

If you're looking for a traditional family resort with water slides and lots happening around the hotel, Splash Beach will naturally be more appealing. If you're looking for a quieter stay with more privacy and experiences that feel a little different, I'd lean towards Villa Zolitude.

Rooms & Private Pool Villas: Better on Paper Than Reality

We booked a Family Duplex with a Private Rooftop Pool, expecting it to be one of the highlights of the stay.

On paper, it sounded ideal. The duplex layout gave us separate sleeping and living areas, making it feel much more spacious than a standard hotel room. Travelling with an 8-year-old, having that extra space was genuinely useful and meant we weren't all living on top of each other for several days.

The villa itself was a good size and offered everything you'd expect for a family stay. The separate levels gave Joshua space to do his own thing, while we could relax elsewhere in the room. From a layout perspective, it worked well.

Unfortunately, the reality didn't quite match the photos or our expectations.

The private rooftop pool was the biggest example. It looks fantastic in the marketing images and was one of the reasons we upgraded to this room category. In practice, it was surprisingly cold and we used it far less than expected. We also found it frustrating that pool towels weren't provided in the villa, meaning you had to collect them separately or use your bath towels rather than simply jumping in whenever you felt like it.

That pretty much summed up our experience of the room. Nothing was fundamentally wrong, but several aspects felt slightly less polished than they should have been for the price point.

The Main Pools Were Actually Better

Ironically, we ended up spending far more time at the resort's main pool than our private one.

Located right beside the beach, the main pool area was one of the stronger parts of the hotel. There was plenty of space, lots of loungers available and food and drink service throughout the day, making it an easy place for families to relax.

Joshua particularly enjoyed hiring one of the underwater scooter-style jet skis available in the pool. At around £20 for 30 minutes it wasn't cheap, but it was genuinely one of his highlights and kept him entertained for far longer than I expected.

The resort also has several smaller pools spread throughout the grounds, so there was never a shortage of places to swim.

However, this was another area where maintenance issues were noticeable. Parts of the wooden decking around the main pool looked worn and damaged, and refurbishment work was taking place during our stay. While it's encouraging that maintenance was being carried out, it did reinforce the feeling that parts of the resort needed investment.

That's probably the best way I can summarise the accommodation and facilities overall. The foundations are there for a really good family resort. The rooms are spacious, the pools are large and the location works well for a relaxing beach stay. But during our visit, too many small things felt tired, unfinished or simply not quite as good as they appeared when we booked.

Beach Access: Great Location, Disappointing Attention to Detail

One thing Splash Beach Resort does have going for it is its location directly on Mai Khao Beach.

The beach is literally on the hotel's doorstep, so it's easy to walk down for a stroll at sunrise or let the kids burn off some energy after spending time by the pool. The sand itself was soft, the beach felt spacious and uncrowded, and the sea was generally calm enough for paddling during our stay.

On paper, it should have been one of the highlights of the resort.

Unfortunately, it was another area where the reality didn't quite match the potential.

During our visit, there was a noticeable amount of rubbish washed up along parts of the beach. Now, to be fair, some of this is undoubtedly outside the hotel's control and can be influenced by tides, weather and seasonal conditions. What surprised me, though, was the apparent lack of effort to keep the area immediately around the resort looking its best.

It's a small detail, but it became a recurring theme throughout our stay. Whether it was the beach, the worn decking around the pools, the water park situation or some of the service issues, there were several moments where it felt like the hotel wasn't paying attention to the finer details that elevate a good family resort into a great one.

That's what made the beach slightly disappointing.

The setting itself is excellent. A long stretch of sand, spectacular sunsets and plenty of space for families. It just felt like more could have been done to maintain the area and help guests make the most of one of the resort's strongest assets.

Food & Dining: Consistent But Unremarkable

Food and drink ended up being one of the more consistent parts of our stay, although it never became a highlight in the way it did at some of the other hotels we stayed in around Thailand.

The pool bar was probably where the hotel performed best. The cocktails were genuinely good, service was usually quick, and the two-for-one happy hour offered decent value. We spent quite a bit of time around the main pool, so being able to order drinks, snacks and lunch without having to move elsewhere was convenient.

Breakfast was perfectly adequate, but compared to other hotels we stayed at in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket, the selection felt more limited. There was enough choice to start the day comfortably, but it lacked some of the variety we'd become used to elsewhere. The absence of familiar options such as bacon won't matter to everyone, but it did make breakfast a little more repetitive for Joshua over multiple days.

Dinner was similar. The buffet offered a reasonable amount of choice, but it felt expensive for what was available and didn't really tempt us into eating there more than necessary. Service was also inconsistent. Sometimes food and drinks arrived quickly, while at other times meals felt slower and less organised.

One thing that stood out throughout the stay was that the dining experience reflected the wider resort. Nothing was particularly bad, but very little felt exceptional either. The food was perfectly manageable for a family stay, especially if you're spending most of your time at the pool, but it wasn't one of the reasons we'd return.

If you're staying here, I'd recommend taking advantage of the happy hour offers and casual poolside dining rather than expecting the restaurants to be a major part of the holiday experience.

Final Verdict: Is Splash Beach Resort Phuket Worth It?

This is one of those hotels where the answer depends heavily on timing and expectations.

If the Splash Jungle Water Park is fully open, I can absolutely see why families choose this resort. The combination of beach access, multiple swimming pools, family accommodation and proximity to the airport is appealing, particularly for families with younger children who want plenty to do without leaving the hotel.

However, our experience highlighted that there is a big difference between what the resort offers on paper and what is available during your stay.

The water park closure was obviously the biggest issue for us, but it wasn't the only one. Maintenance work, signs of wear around parts of the resort, inconsistent service and a series of smaller operational frustrations meant the overall experience never quite matched our expectations.

That doesn't mean Splash Beach Resort is a bad hotel. In fact, there were aspects we genuinely enjoyed. The beachfront location is excellent, the main pool area worked well for families, the cocktails were surprisingly good and Joshua loved some of the activities available around the pool.

The problem was that too many of the details felt overlooked, and when a hotel's biggest attraction isn't available, the remaining experience needs to work even harder to justify the price.

Would We Stay Again?

Honestly, no.

The water park closure was a major factor in our disappointment, but looking back, it wasn't the only reason. Even if the water park had been open, I'm not convinced Splash Beach Resort would have become one of our favourite family hotels in Thailand.

The resort has plenty of facilities, but it never really felt special. The rooms were functional rather than memorable, parts of the resort felt tired, and there were enough service and maintenance issues that it often felt like the focus was on accommodating large numbers of guests rather than delivering a great guest experience.

That's not to say families won't enjoy it. If the water park is open and you're looking for a convenient resort near the airport where children can spend most of their time swimming, it may tick the right boxes.

For us, though, the hotel lacked the attention to detail that makes a stay memorable. Whether it was the condition of parts of the pool area, rubbish on the beach, the airport transfer confusion, checkout issues or the handling of the water park closure, there were too many moments where it felt like things were being managed adequately rather than exceptionally.

Looking back at our Thailand trip, Villa Zolitude, The Riverie Chiang Rai and the Royal Orchid Sheraton Bangkok are all hotels I'd happily return to. Splash Beach Resort isn't on that list. That's not because it was terrible, but because the overall experience never quite lived up to what was promised. The resort felt functional rather than memorable, and there were too many small issues that stopped it from becoming a hotel we'd actively recommend.

In our experience, probably not.

We stayed in a Family Duplex with a Private Rooftop Pool, and while the extra space was useful, we actually spent more time at the resort's main pools. The rooftop pool looked impressive in the photos but was colder than expected and wasn't used nearly as much as we'd anticipated.

For most families, I'd be inclined to save the upgrade cost and make use of the main resort facilities instead.
