When we planned our family trip to Phuket, we spent far more time researching areas than hotels.

That's because Phuket is much bigger than many people realise. Choosing the wrong location can easily add hours of unnecessary driving to your holiday, especially if you're trying to balance beaches, island tours, family attractions and airport transfers. Before looking at individual hotels, the first question families should ask is which part of Phuket suits their type of holiday.

Quick answer: where should families stay in Phuket?

For most families, there isn't one "best" area. It depends on what you want from the trip.

If you're looking for family resorts, quieter beaches and easier airport transfers, North Phuket is usually the better choice. Areas such as Mai Khao, Nai Yang and Nai Thon are relaxed, less developed and ideal for families who want a beach-and-pool holiday.

If you want to be closer to restaurants, island tours, viewpoints, night markets and attractions, South Phuket is usually a better fit. Areas such as Kata, Karon, Rawai and Chalong offer more choice and make exploring the island easier.

We actually stayed in both. We spent part of our trip at Splash Beach Resort in Mai Khao (North Phuket) and part at Villa Zolitude in Chalong (South Phuket), which gave us a good understanding of how different each area feels and who they're best suited to.

In this guide, I'll compare North Phuket vs South Phuket, break down the main family-friendly areas within each region, explain who each area is best for, and share what worked well for our family, what didn't, and where we'd stay if we visited Phuket again.

Why Choosing the Right Area in Phuket Matters

One of the biggest mistakes families make when booking Phuket is choosing a hotel without thinking about location. On the map, Phuket doesn't always look particularly large. In reality, journeys between different parts of the island can be surprisingly long, especially during busy periods.

That means your choice of area affects:

  • How much time you spend in transfers

  • How easy tour pick-ups are

  • Restaurant choices

  • Access to beaches

  • How relaxing your days feel

  • Whether you spend more time exploring or travelling

After staying in both the north and south of the island, I don't think there is a universally "best" area. Instead, there is a best area depending on the type of holiday you want.

North vs South Phuket: Which is Better for Families?

Before looking at specific hotels, the biggest decision is whether to stay in North Phuket or South Phuket.

In simple terms:

  • North Phuket is generally quieter, with longer beaches, fewer crowds, larger family resorts and easier airport transfers.

  • South Phuket offers more variety, including popular beach towns such as Kata, Karon and Rawai, along with easier access to restaurants, night markets, viewpoints and island-hopping tours.

The important thing to understand is that both North and South Phuket are made up of several very different areas, each offering a different family experience.

If I was travelling with younger children and wanted a traditional resort holiday with easy airport transfers, I'd choose Mai Khao or Nai Yang in North Phuket.

If I wanted to spend more time exploring the island, visiting viewpoints, taking boat trips and eating out in different restaurants, I'd choose Kata, Karon or Chalong in South Phuket.

For our family, splitting the stay worked brilliantly. We stayed in Chalong in South Phuket and Mai Khao in North Phuket, giving us a mix of jungle and beaches. It's worth noting that Chalong was very much an accommodation-led decision rather than an area-led one. We chose it because of a specific jungle-style villa experience rather than the location itself, something I'll cover in more detail in the South Phuket section. Mai Khao, meanwhile, was chosen for its family resorts, quieter beaches and easy airport access. Together, the two stays gave us a good feel for what different parts of Phuket offer families.

North Phuket: Best for Relaxation, Resorts and Easy Airport Access

North Phuket offers a very different experience from the island's busier southern beach towns. This part of the island is generally quieter, less developed and home to many of Phuket's larger resort-style hotels.

For families, the biggest advantage is that everything feels a little easier. The beaches are less crowded, traffic is lighter and you're much closer to Phuket Airport, making arrival and departure days significantly less stressful.

North Phuket tends to suit families who want to spend more time enjoying their hotel, beach and pool, rather than constantly moving between attractions and restaurants.

Mai Khao Beach

Mai Khao is probably the best-known family area in North Phuket and is where many families choose to stay for a classic resort holiday.

You'll find:

  • Splash Jungle Water Park

  • Large family resorts

  • Long sandy beaches

  • Plane spotting beach

  • Easy airport access

  • Quieter surroundings than southern Phuket

This is where we stayed at Splash Beach Resort. We had mixed feelings about the hotel itself because the waterpark, one of the main reasons we booked it, was closed during our stay. If I was booking again, I'd probably choose a different hotel. However, I wouldn't change the area.

Mai Khao worked brilliantly from a family perspective. The beach was quiet, the airport transfer was incredibly easy, and it felt like a great place to unwind after the busier parts of our Thailand itinerary.

Nai Yang Beach

Nai Yang feels very different to Mai Khao. Rather than large-scale resorts, this area has more of a local beach-town atmosphere. The beach sits alongside Sirinat National Park and offers a good balance between tourist facilities and authentic local life.

Advantages include:

  • Calm beach

  • Local restaurants

  • National park setting

  • Less commercial atmosphere

  • Short airport transfer

  • More affordable accommodation options

Families who like eating at local restaurants and having amenities within walking distance often prefer Nai Yang to some of the larger resort areas.

Recommended family hotels:

Best for: Families wanting a balance of beach, local atmosphere and convenience.

Nai Thon Beach

Nai Thon is one of Phuket's quieter and more scenic beach areas. It's often overlooked in favour of the more famous beaches but can be a fantastic option for families who want a slower pace and a less commercial environment.

Advantages include:

  • Beautiful sandy beach

  • Fewer crowds

  • Relaxed atmosphere

  • Scenic surroundings

  • Smaller-scale development

  • Good family resorts

The downside is that there are fewer restaurants and attractions within walking distance compared to other parts of Phuket. However, for some families that's exactly the appeal.

Recommended family hotels:

Best for: Families seeking a quieter beach holiday away from Phuket's busiest tourist areas.

Who Should Choose North Phuket?

North Phuket is usually the best choice for families who:

  • Want a beach-and-pool holiday

  • Prefer larger family resorts

  • Have younger children

  • Want easier airport transfers

  • Prefer quieter surroundings

  • Plan to spend more time relaxing than sightseeing

For us, North Phuket worked brilliantly as the final part of our trip. After Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, the slower pace, quieter beaches and shorter airport transfer were exactly what we needed before flying home.

South Phuket: Best for Attractions, Restaurants and Exploring the Island

While North Phuket is better suited to resort-focused holidays, South Phuket is where you'll find many of the island's attractions, viewpoints, restaurants, markets and boat trip departures.

This part of Phuket generally feels much livelier. Distances between attractions are shorter, there are more dining options, and you'll spend less time driving if your holiday includes island tours, cafés, viewpoints and sightseeing.

For families who like to explore rather than spend every day at the same resort, South Phuket often makes the better base.

Chalong

Chalong is one of Phuket's most practical areas, although it's important to understand that it isn't a traditional beach destination. There isn't a swimmable beach in the same way you'll find in Kata or Karon, but what Chalong does offer is a very central location.

Advantages include:

  • Easy access to attractions across the island

  • Shorter journeys to many viewpoints and activities

  • Good local restaurants

  • Chalong Pier boat departures

  • Less touristy atmosphere

  • Easy access to Big Buddha and Wat Chalong

This is where we based ourselves at Villa Zolitude, and it ended up being one of our favourite stays of the entire Thailand trip.

It's worth noting that we didn't choose Chalong because we specifically wanted to stay there. We chose it because of Villa Zolitude's secluded jungle setting and private pool villas, and the location simply happened to work very well for exploring the island.

For us, it provided something completely different from the beach resorts we'd stayed in elsewhere, feeling more like a rainforest retreat than a typical Phuket hotel.

Recommended family hotels:

  • Cocoville Phuket – Popular with families wanting larger accommodation and easy access to attractions.

Best for: Families wanting to explore the island, private villas and a quieter, more unique Phuket experience.

Kata Beach

Kata is probably the most popular family beach area in Phuket and would likely be my recommendation for most first-time visitors.

It manages to balance convenience and atmosphere extremely well.

Advantages include:

  • Family-friendly beach

  • Plenty of restaurants

  • Shops and cafés

  • Surfing lessons

  • Walkable layout

  • Easy access to viewpoints and attractions

Unlike some parts of Phuket, you don't necessarily need to rely on transport for every meal or activity. Many hotels, restaurants and shops are within easy walking distance.

Recommended family hotels:

Best for: First-time visitors, beach holidays and families who want everything within easy reach.

Karon Beach

Karon offers a similar experience to Kata but feels slightly more spacious and less compact.

The beach is one of the longest in Phuket, which means it rarely feels overcrowded even during busy periods.

Advantages include:

  • Long sandy beach

  • Family resorts

  • Plenty of restaurants

  • More space than Kata and Patong

  • Relaxed atmosphere

  • Easy access to nearby attractions

Many families choose Karon because it provides a traditional Phuket beach holiday without some of the crowds found elsewhere.

Recommended family hotels:

Best for: Families wanting a classic Phuket beach resort experience.

Rawai

Rawai feels very different from Kata and Karon. This area has a much more local atmosphere and is often overlooked by first-time visitors. While it doesn't have one of Phuket's best swimming beaches, it offers easy access to island trips, local restaurants and some of the island's most beautiful viewpoints.

Advantages include:

  • Excellent seafood restaurants

  • Island-hopping boat trips

  • Local atmosphere

  • Nearby viewpoints

  • Less commercial feel

  • Good access to southern Phuket attractions

Families planning lots of day trips often like Rawai because it's well positioned for exploring the southern part of the island.

Recommended family hotels:

Best for: Families wanting a more authentic Phuket experience and easy access to day trips.

Who Should Choose South Phuket?

South Phuket is usually the better choice for families who:

  • Want to explore the island

  • Plan to take boat trips

  • Enjoy restaurants and cafés

  • Want more sightseeing options

  • Prefer a wider choice of accommodation

  • Don't mind slightly busier surroundings

For us, South Phuket delivered some of our favourite experiences. We loved our stay at Villa Zolitude, enjoyed having easy access to attractions and appreciated the variety of things to see and do nearby. If North Phuket was about slowing down and relaxing, South Phuket was where we packed most of our activities and adventures into the trip.

South Phuket is also a better base if you're planning island tours and excursions, with many operators collecting directly from hotels in this part of the island. Areas I'd Avoid With Kids

Choosing the right area in Phuket can make a huge difference to your holiday. While there aren't any areas I'd say families should completely avoid, there are a couple that I personally wouldn't prioritise, especially on a first family trip to Phuket.

Patong

Patong is Phuket's busiest and most famous tourist area. You'll find plenty to do, including restaurants, shopping centres, markets, entertainment and organised activities. Some families stay here and have a great time, particularly if they like having lots happening around them.

However, for our family, it wouldn't be my first choice.

Patong is typically the busiest part of the island, with heavier traffic, more crowds and a noticeably livelier atmosphere both during the day and at night. If you're travelling with younger children or looking for a more relaxed beach holiday, areas such as Kata, Karon or Mai Khao generally offer a better balance of family-friendly facilities without quite as much noise and congestion.

That said, Patong can still be worth visiting for an afternoon or evening if you want to experience a different side of Phuket without committing to staying there.

Bangla Road

If you're travelling with children, I'd avoid staying directly around Bangla Road.

Bangla Road is Phuket's main nightlife district and comes alive after dark with bars, clubs, live music and entertainment venues. While it's a famous part of Phuket, it's very much geared towards adult nightlife rather than family holidays.

You may still find yourself walking through the area out of curiosity if you're visiting Patong, but I wouldn't choose accommodation nearby. There are plenty of family-friendly resorts elsewhere on the island that offer better beaches, more space and a more relaxed atmosphere.

For most families, you're unlikely to feel you've missed out by staying elsewhere, and you'll probably enjoy a quieter and more comfortable holiday as a result.

Final Verdict: North or South Phuket for Families?

If I had to choose just one area, I'd personally choose South Phuket.

For our family, it felt more varied, more interesting and better connected to many of the experiences we wanted from Phuket. We found ourselves closer to viewpoints, attractions, restaurants, island tours and some of the island's most memorable experiences. It also felt more unique than simply staying in a large beach resort for a week.

That said, our experience in South Phuket was heavily influenced by our choice of accommodation. We stayed at Villa Zolitude, which offered a completely different side of Phuket. Rather than a traditional beach hotel, it was a secluded jungle retreat with private pool villas, and we absolutely loved it. However, if your idea of a Phuket family holiday is waking up by the beach, spending most days around the pool and having everything within walking distance, I can completely see why many families choose Kata, Karon or Mai Khao instead.

In reality, the best solution may be exactly what we did.

Phuket is easy to navigate by Grab, and moving between hotels was far simpler than we expected. Splitting your stay gives you the chance to experience two very different sides of the island. You could spend a few nights in South Phuket exploring and sightseeing, before finishing in North Phuket enjoying quieter beaches and an easier airport transfer.

Looking back, that's the approach we'd follow again.

Is Chalong a good place to stay in Phuket?

Chalong can be an excellent base if you're planning to explore Phuket rather than spend all day at the beach.

It's centrally located, has plenty of restaurants and makes it easy to reach attractions across the island. We chose the area because of Villa Zolitude, and it ended up being one of our favourite stays of the entire Thailand trip.

If you have a week or more in Phuket, I'd seriously consider it.

We found it easy to move between hotels using Grab, and staying in both North and South Phuket gave us two completely different experiences. It allowed us to combine sightseeing and activities with more traditional beach-and-pool relaxation.
