If you're trying to decide between Thailand and Costa Rica for an August family holiday, you're not alone. We faced exactly the same decision ourselves. We travelled to Costa Rica with our son Joshua in August 2024 when he was 7, followed by Thailand in August 2025 when he was 8, with both trips lasting between 10 and 14 days. Having experienced both destinations as a family, I can honestly say they're two of the best long-haul family holidays we've taken, but they excel in very different areas.
Quick Answer: Thailand or Costa Rica?
The honest answer is that there isn't a single "better" destination. I'd say the best choice comes down to what your family enjoys most.
If you're looking for beaches, island hopping, family-friendly hotels, great food, culture and excellent value for money, Thailand has a lot going for it.
If your idea of the perfect family holiday involves sloths, monkeys, rainforests, volcanoes, waterfalls and outdoor adventure, Costa Rica is incredibly hard to beat.
It's also worth noting that both destinations fall within their respective rainy seasons during the UK summer holidays. We experienced rain in both Costa Rica and Thailand, but neither trip was significantly affected by it. In both cases, the rain generally came in short bursts, often later in the day, and certainly wasn't enough to stop us recommending either destination for an August family holiday.
The reality is that both Thailand and Costa Rica offer experiences you simply won't find in Europe. The challenge isn't deciding whether they're good family destinations. It's deciding whether your family would rather spend their days exploring tropical islands and temples, or spotting wildlife in the rainforest and searching for sloths in the trees.

Unlike many destination comparisons, this isn't based on brochures or research alone. It's based on what actually matters once you're travelling with children and trying to balance sightseeing, adventure, downtime and family logistics. By the end, you'll have a clear idea whether Thailand or Costa Rica is the better family holiday for you.

Thailand vs Costa Rica: Location, Flight Times & August Travel Logistics
Thailand and Costa Rica may both be tropical family destinations, but they're located on opposite sides of the world and offer very different travel experiences.
Thailand, located in Southeast Asia, combines beaches, islands, temples, markets, culture and family-friendly resorts. Most UK families will fly into Bangkok before continuing on to destinations such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai or Phuket. One thing to be aware of is just how large Thailand is. A typical first-time itinerary often involves a combination of domestic flights, transfers and hotel changes to experience different parts of the country. Costa Rica, located in Central America between Nicaragua and Panama, offers a very different experience. Rather than focusing on culture and beaches, most family itineraries revolve around wildlife, rainforest, volcanoes and outdoor adventure. The country is also more compact, meaning many families can experience multiple destinations using a single rental car rather than relying on internal flights.
From the UK, both destinations require a long-haul flight and some planning around connections. One challenge for families travelling during the summer holidays is that direct flights to Costa Rica are often limited or unavailable in August, meaning many itineraries involve flight connections before you even arrive. Thailand usually offers more flight options, but because the country is so large, you're then likely to need additional domestic flights if you want to combine Bangkok, Northern Thailand and the islands.

Most families can hire a car and complete a road-trip style itinerary, whereas Thailand often involves a mix of flights, taxis and transfers between destinations. Weather in August: Thailand vs Costa Rica
This is one of the biggest concerns for families because August falls within the rainy season in both destinations.
In reality, I wouldn't let that put you off either destination.
During our trip to Costa Rica, particularly around the rainforest regions such as La Fortuna, the weather felt more unpredictable. We experienced regular afternoon showers and some impressive thunderstorms overnight, although they rarely stopped us doing what we had planned.
In Thailand, we generally found the weather more predictable. Most days were sunny and warm, with the occasional heavy downpour or full rainy day mixed in. We still managed island tours, sightseeing, pool days and outdoor activities throughout the trip.

Weather Verdict
Thailand has a slight edge, but only just.
Both destinations are worth visiting during the UK summer holidays, and the weather wouldn't be the deciding factor for me. The bigger question is whether your family prefers beaches, islands and culture or rainforests, wildlife and adventure.

Family Holiday Costs: Thailand vs Costa Rica
Comparing costs between Thailand and Costa Rica isn't completely straightforward because our trips were structured differently.
In Costa Rica, we spent part of the trip in an all-inclusive beach resort, while in Thailand we stayed in a mix of city hotels, family resorts, serviced apartments and a private pool villa. We also spent longer in Thailand, so I've converted both trips into an approximate average cost per day to make the comparison fairer.
Based on our actual spending:
Costa Rica: approximately £222 per day per person including international flights (£666 per day for a family of three).
Thailand: approximately £143-£166 per day per person including international and internal flights (£429-£500 per day for a family of three).
The biggest differences were accommodation, food and transport. In Thailand, we generally found restaurants, hotels and getting around to be significantly cheaper, even when staying in higher-quality accommodation. Costa Rica offered incredible wildlife and nature experiences, but we often found ourselves paying more for activities, food and family rooms.
Cost Verdict
Thailand offers better overall value for money.
That doesn't necessarily make it the better destination, but your budget will generally stretch further. We spent a similar total amount on Thailand despite travelling for several extra days and covering significantly more ground.

If your family's idea of the perfect holiday includes beach days, swimming pools and plenty of downtime, both destinations deliver, but in different ways.
Thailand is famous for its tropical beaches, island scenery and family-friendly resorts. Places such as Phuket offer calm waters, island-hopping opportunities and a huge range of hotels designed around beach and pool time. That said, not every beach is postcard-perfect. During our trip, some beaches were absolutely beautiful, while others felt busier, more developed and occasionally a little untidy than we'd expected from social media photos.
Costa Rica's beaches felt wilder and more natural. Rather than rows of resorts and beach clubs, many are backed by rainforest and wildlife. We regularly saw monkeys near the beach and often felt much closer to nature than we did in Thailand. The trade-off is that the beaches aren't always as visually spectacular as Thailand's white sand islands, and some areas have stronger currents which can make swimming less predictable.
For pure beach scenery, I'd give Thailand the edge.
For nature and a more untouched feel, Costa Rica wins.

Thailand wins for most families.
The combination of beaches, island tours, family-friendly resorts and generally calmer swimming conditions makes it easier to build a relaxing family holiday. Costa Rica's beaches are beautiful, but they're often part of a wider wildlife and adventure experience rather than the main attraction themselves.

Wildlife and Nature: Thailand vs Costa Rica
If wildlife and nature are your family's priority, this is where the biggest difference between the two destinations becomes apparent.
Costa Rica is one of the best wildlife destinations we've ever visited. Seeing animals in their natural habitat became a normal part of the trip rather than a special excursion. We spotted monkeys on beaches, in hotel grounds and while driving between destinations, alongside sloths, toucans, iguanas and countless other species. The rainforest, volcanoes and waterfalls also make Costa Rica feel incredibly wild and immersive.
Thailand offers fantastic nature too, but it's a different experience. We loved visiting elephants, exploring the jungle scenery around Phuket and Chiang Mai, and spending time in places such as Doi Inthanon National Park. However, wildlife generally feels like part of a planned activity rather than something you encounter around every corner.
Wildlife & Nature Verdict
Costa Rica wins.
Thailand offers beautiful landscapes and memorable wildlife experiences, but if your children's dream holiday involves spotting monkeys, sloths and exotic wildlife in the wild, Costa Rica is difficult to beat. In Costa Rica, nature often feels like the main attraction. In Thailand, it's more of a complement to the beaches, culture and overall travel experience.

Family Activities: Thailand vs Costa Rica
This is probably the closest category because both destinations offer fantastic family experiences, they're just very different.
In Thailand, our highlights included:

Island hopping in Phuket
Bamboo rafting
ATV adventures
Temple visits
Night markets
Beaches and resort pools
The variety was what stood out most. We could go from exploring ancient temples one day to island hopping or relaxing by the pool the next. In Costa Rica, the focus was much more on nature and outdoor adventure. Family favourites included:

Family Activities Verdict
It's a draw.
Thailand offers more variety, combining culture, beaches, food and adventure in one trip.
Costa Rica offers a more immersive nature and wildlife experience, with many activities focused on the rainforest and outdoors.
For families who love beaches, boats and a mix of experiences, I'd lean towards Thailand. For families who want wildlife, adventure and nature to be the main event, I'd lean towards Costa Rica.

Food: Thailand vs Costa Rica
Food was one of the areas where we noticed the biggest difference between the two destinations.
Thailand offers an incredible variety of food, from street food and night markets to hotel restaurants and international dining. We found it very easy to eat well, and surprisingly easy to feed Joshua. Fried rice, chicken, noodles, fruit smoothies, pancakes and fresh fruit were available almost everywhere, meaning there was always something familiar alongside the more adventurous options.
One of the things we loved most was the variety. Whether we were eating at a Bangkok food court, a Chiang Mai night market or a beachfront restaurant in Phuket, every meal felt different.
Costa Rica's food was simpler and more repetitive. Traditional dishes such as gallo pinto, casados, grilled meats and rice-and-bean-based meals are tasty and family-friendly, but after 10 days we found there was less variety than in Thailand. The quality was generally good, especially the fresh fruit, but food wasn't a highlight of the trip in the same way it was in Thailand.
For children, both destinations are easy enough to navigate, but Thailand offers more variety and more opportunities to try different foods without stepping too far outside most kids' comfort zones.

Thailand wins comfortably.
Costa Rica's food is enjoyable, fresh and family-friendly, but Thailand is one of the world's great food destinations. The range of flavours, dining experiences and availability of child-friendly options made eating out a genuine highlight of the holiday rather than simply a necessity.

Hotels: Thailand vs Costa Rica
Both destinations offer some fantastic family hotels, but they deliver very different experiences.
In Costa Rica, the hotels often become part of the adventure. We stayed at Hotel Los Lagos in La Fortuna, where the hot springs, tropical gardens and wildlife-filled setting felt like an attraction in its own right. We then moved to Planet Hollywood Costa Rica, which gave us the classic beach resort experience and made relaxing after days of exploring incredibly easy.
In Thailand, we found far more variety. Across two weeks we stayed in riverside city hotels, serviced apartments, family resorts and a private pool villa. The standout hotel for Joshua was undoubtedly The Riverie Chiang Rai, thanks to its water slides, lazy river and family-friendly atmosphere. For the adults, Villa Zolitude Phuket was probably the highlight, particularly the private pool villa, floating lunch and peaceful rainforest setting.
What surprised us most was how much accommodation we could get for our money in Thailand. The standard of hotels, facilities and service generally felt higher for the price, and we found a much wider range of family-friendly options across different budgets.

Thailand wins for most families.
Costa Rica offers some memorable hotels, particularly if you love nature and all-inclusive resorts, but Thailand provides more choice, better overall value and a wider range of family-friendly accommodation styles.

Final Verdict: Thailand or Costa Rica?
Having travelled to Costa Rica with Joshua in August 2024 and Thailand in August 2025, both on family trips lasting between 10 and 14 days, I don't think there's a wrong choice here.
If your family loves wildlife, rainforest adventures, volcanoes, waterfalls and seeing animals in their natural habitat, I'd choose Costa Rica. Watching monkeys on the beach, spotting sloths in the trees and exploring the rainforest felt genuinely different from anything we've experienced elsewhere.
However, if I was recommending one destination for most families, I'd probably choose Thailand.
Thailand simply offers more variety in a single trip. Over two weeks we combined temples, markets, island hopping, beaches, family-friendly hotels, elephants, bamboo rafting, ATV adventures and plenty of downtime. We also found the hotels, food and day-to-day costs offered better overall value.
That doesn't mean Thailand wins every category. Costa Rica was stronger for wildlife, nature and that feeling of being immersed in the outdoors. But Thailand was stronger for beaches, food, accommodation and the sheer range of experiences available.
The other thing worth mentioning is August weather. Both destinations fall within their rainy seasons, and we experienced rain in both. In reality, neither trip was badly affected by it and I wouldn't let the weather put you off either option.
So if you're still undecided:
Choose Thailand if you want beaches, culture, food, family resorts and a bit of everything.
Choose Costa Rica if your dream holiday revolves around wildlife, rainforest and outdoor adventure.
Choose either if you're worried about travelling during August, because we had fantastic family holidays in both despite the rainy season.
For our family, Thailand just edges it overall. But whenever Joshua talks about Costa Rica, the first things he mentions are the monkeys, the rainforest and the wildlife. That probably tells you everything you need to know about how difficult this decision really is.
