Phuket is often seen as one of Thailand's easiest islands for families, and after visiting with our 8-year-old son Joshua, I can see why. Unlike some smaller Thai islands that are primarily focused on beaches and relaxation, Phuket offers a huge range of family-friendly activities, from island-hopping adventures and elephant sanctuaries to water parks, cultural attractions and adventure tours.

The biggest challenge isn't finding things to do. It's deciding which activities are actually worth fitting into your itinerary.

Rather than choosing one or the other, we opted for a speedboat tour that combined both James Bond Island and Phi Phi-style island scenery into a single day.

This worked particularly well because it gave us a broader experience of what makes Phuket's surrounding islands so famous. Joshua loved the speedboat journeys, spotting different islands and jumping off for swimming and beach stops along the way.

What stood out most was just how different the scenery felt from Phuket itself. The limestone formations around Phang Nga Bay look almost unreal in places, while the beaches and water around the Phi Phi area are exactly the sort of postcard scenery people travel to Thailand to see.

The only thing I'd say is that these are usually full-day tours, so they're best suited to families happy spending several hours on and off boats.

However, if you're short on time, I wouldn't prioritise it above many of the activities elsewhere on this list. What Is It?

Sometimes the best activity isn't an excursion at all. Phuket has some fantastic family-friendly resorts and many offer enough facilities to fill an entire day.

Family holidays don't need to involve constant sightseeing.

Some of Joshua's favourite memories came from:
