If you're planning between 5 - 7 days in Phuket with kids, this itinerary is for you.
Phuket was the final stop on our Thailand family holiday, and after the cities, temples and sightseeing of Bangkok and Northern Thailand, it provided exactly what we needed: beaches, island adventures, pool time and a chance to slow down a little.
Quick answer: how should you spend 5 days in Phuket with kids?
I'd combine one island-hopping day, one adventure day, one or two beach and resort days, and at least one completely flexible day. For our family, that meant a James Bond Island tour, an ATV and bamboo rafting adventure, seeing the elephants, time at the beach, a private villa experience and plenty of swimming. It gave us a good balance of relaxation and activities without feeling like every day needed to be scheduled.
The reality is that there isn't one perfect Phuket itinerary. Some families will happily spend five days moving between beaches, while others will prioritise boat trips, elephant sanctuaries, water parks or adventure activities. This itinerary reflects what worked best for our family with Joshua (aged 8), while highlighting alternatives you might want to swap in depending on your children's ages and interests.
This guide covers:
Where we stayed in North and South Phuket
The best day trips and island tours
Family-friendly adventure activities
Beach and pool days
How to split your time between different parts of the island
Ideas for extending your stay

Before You Start: How This Phuket Itinerary Works
This itinerary assumes you've already arrived in Phuket and are ready to start exploring.
For us, Phuket was the final stop on our Thailand family holiday. We flew into Phuket from Chiang Mai, collected our luggage and booked a Grab taxi directly to Villa Zolitude in South Phuket, which became our base for the first half of the trip.
It's also worth saying that this itinerary is designed to be flexible. Every family travels differently. Some families will want more beach time, others more boat trips, while some children will happily spend all day in a pool. Use this itinerary as a framework and swap activities in and out depending on your family's interests and energy levels.
Day 1: Island-Hopping Adventure
If there's one experience most families associate with Phuket, it's island hopping. For that reason, we started our stay with a boat trip. Partly because the weather forecast looked good, but mainly because it felt like one of those iconic Phuket experiences that shouldn't be missed.
The biggest decision you'll need to make is whether to visit:
James Bond Island
Phi Phi Islands
Both work well for families but offer very different experiences. James Bond Island tends to focus more on dramatic scenery, sea caves and sightseeing, while Phi Phi is more about beaches, swimming, snorkelling and spending time in the water.
There isn't necessarily a right answer, which is why we dedicated an entire article to comparing them. If you're struggling to choose, read James Bond Island vs Phi Phi Islands: Which Boat Trip Is Better for Families? Can You Do Both?
Whatever option you choose, I'd schedule it early in your stay. Boat trips are often weather dependent, and placing them early gives you flexibility if conditions change.

Evening BBQ Experience
After a full day on the water, we headed back to Villa Zolitude for one of our favourite evenings of the trip.
We booked the villa's private BBQ experience, where a member of the team cooked a selection of meats, seafood and side dishes directly at our villa while we relaxed by the pool. Instead of rushing out to a restaurant, we were able to enjoy dinner in complete privacy with views across the surrounding rainforest.
Joshua spent most of the evening swimming while dinner was prepared, and by the time we sat down to eat everyone was relaxed and happy. After a busy day of speedboats, beaches and sightseeing, it was exactly the kind of low-effort family experience we needed.
It also showcased one of the biggest advantages of staying somewhere like Villa Zolitude. The villa itself became part of the holiday rather than simply somewhere to sleep, which is why we deliberately built a slower day into our itinerary to enjoy it properly.

Day 2: Slow Down and Enjoy the Villa
One of the biggest mistakes families make in Phuket is trying to fill every day with tours.
After our island-hopping day, we deliberately planned a slower day, and looking back, it ended up being one of our favourites.
When you're travelling around Thailand, it's easy to feel like you should always be doing something. But after Bangkok, Chiang Mai and our first busy days in Phuket, we were ready for a break. Rather than setting an alarm and rushing off to another attraction, we gave ourselves permission to enjoy where we were staying.
Why We Loved Villa Zolitude
We stayed at Villa Zolitude in South Phuket, and it was one of the most memorable hotels from our entire Thailand trip.
Unlike many Phuket resorts, Villa Zolitude isn't located on the beach. Instead, it's tucked away in the rainforest-covered hills above Chalong, surrounded by tropical greenery and far removed from Phuket's busier tourist areas.
For some families, that location might sound like a drawback. For us, it was exactly the reason we booked it.
After several busy days of travelling and sightseeing, it felt more like staying in a private jungle retreat than a typical Phuket resort. Waking up to the sounds of birds, looking out over the trees from our private pool and having no plans for the day was a welcome change of pace.
We spent most of the day:
Swimming in our private pool
Relaxing on the terrace
Enjoying the jungle views
Watching wildlife around the villa
Having a floating lunch experience
Simply slowing down and recharging
The floating lunch was a fun novelty and something Joshua particularly enjoyed. It's not something we'd normally do, but it added to the feeling that this day was about enjoying the villa rather than using it purely as a place to sleep.
Looking back, we probably needed this day more than we realised. It broke up the itinerary nicely between activities and gave us time to properly appreciate one of our favourite stays of the trip.

Day 3: Move to North Phuket
Before travelling, we weren't completely convinced that splitting our stay would be worth the hassle. It absolutely was.
One of the reasons Phuket is so popular with families is that different parts of the island offer completely different experiences. South Phuket gave us easy access to activities, viewpoints and day trips. North Phuket felt far more focused on beaches, resorts and relaxation.
Moving between the two was surprisingly easy. We booked a Grab taxi, loaded our luggage into the car and made the journey from Villa Zolitude in Chalong to Mai Khao Beach in North Phuket. The journey was straightforward, affordable and far less stressful than we expected.
Why North Phuket Feels Different
The moment we arrived, the atmosphere changed. After several busy days of island tours, exploring and travelling around the island, that slower pace was exactly what we wanted. Rather than planning the next activity, North Phuket encouraged us to slow down and enjoy the beach, pool and resort facilities.
If you're deciding where to stay, read Best Family Areas in Phuket: North vs South Phuket Hotels, Beaches & Attractions, where I compare the different regions and explain which type of family each area suits best.
Afternoon at Mai Khao Beach
Rather than rushing into another activity, we spent the afternoon enjoying everything that makes Mai Khao different from the rest of Phuket.
Compared to South Phuket, the area felt far more resort-focused and almost had an all-inclusive holiday feel to it. In some ways, you could have been anywhere in the world. It didn't feel as distinctly Thai as Chalong, but that's also part of its appeal for families looking for a slower, easier holiday.
We spent our time walking along the huge stretch of Mai Khao Beach, relaxing by the pool, exploring the resort grounds and hiring a mini jet ski. It was one of those afternoons where there was no real plan, which made it a nice contrast to the busier first half of our Phuket stay.
One of the unexpected highlights was the famous plane-spotting beach. Because Mai Khao sits directly beneath Phuket Airport's flight path, aircraft pass surprisingly low overhead as they come in to land. I initially assumed we'd stop for a few photos before moving on, but Joshua was completely fascinated and happily stood on the beach watching plane after plane fly in. It ended up being one of those simple, free experiences that created a disproportionate amount of excitement.
After several days of tours, transfers and activities, the combination of a quieter beach, slower pace and open space felt like exactly what we needed. It also reinforced just how different North Phuket feels from the more energetic and activity-focused south of the island.
Splash Beach Resort
We chose Splash Beach Resort largely because of the attached water park. On paper, it seemed like the perfect family hotel. Beach access, large pools, family rooms and a water park all sounded like a winning combination.
Unfortunately, the water park was closed during our stay. That definitely affected our overall experience and meant we couldn't fully enjoy one of the main reasons we'd booked the hotel in the first place. Because of that, if I were returning to Mai Khao, I'd probably look at alternatives such as the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa or Anantara Mai Khao instead.
That said, I wouldn't change the area. The location itself worked brilliantly for our family. The beach was excellent, airport transfers were incredibly easy and the slower pace felt like the perfect contrast to the busier first half of our Phuket stay.
This is really where North Phuket shines. Even if you don't stay at Splash Beach Resort, Mai Khao remains one of the easiest and most relaxing areas on the island for families.
For our full review, including what worked, what didn't and whether we'd book it again, see Splash Beach Resort Phuket Review
By the end of the day, we were glad we'd chosen to experience both sides of Phuket. South Phuket had delivered most of our adventures, while North Phuket felt like the ideal place to recharge before the final part of our holiday.

Day 4: ATV & Bamboo Rafting Adventure
This was probably our most adventurous day in Phuket. We booked a combined ATV and bamboo rafting tour, which took us away from the beaches and into a very different side of the island.
The day included:
Off-road ATV riding
Jungle scenery and wildlife
Bamboo rafting
Local viewpoints including waterfall swimming
Rural parts of Phuket most tourists never see
It was far more varied than we expected and gave us a different perspective on Phuket beyond beaches and resorts. Whether it's suitable for your family depends largely on your children's age and confidence levels, but Joshua absolutely loved it.

Day 5: Keep It Flexible
By day five you'll have a much better idea of what your family has enjoyed most. That's why I'd keep this day flexible.
Potential options include:
Elephant sanctuaries
Another island-hopping trip
Extra beach time
Water parks
Snorkelling trips
Pool days
Phuket Old Town
If we returned, we'd probably leave this day unscheduled again. Some families will want another activity-packed day. Others will want an extra beach day. Both are valid. For more inspiration, see Best Things to Do in Phuket With Kids

If You Have More Than 5 Days in Phuket
If you're spending 6 or 7 days in Phuket, I wouldn't necessarily add more activities.
Instead, I'd probably add:
Another beach day
More time at your resort
A second island trip
A visit to Phuket Old Town
Another family-friendly excursion
Phuket is one of the easiest places in Thailand to extend because it allows you to slow down without feeling bored.
What to Pack for Phuket Tours
A few items made a huge difference during our excursions:
Travel towels (they pack down incredibly small)
Waterproof phone case
High-factor sunscreen
Travel sickness tablets
Refillable water bottle
eSIM to save on data costs
The waterproof phone case was probably the most useful purchase. It allowed us to take photos during boat trips, rafting experiences and beach days without worrying about damaging our phones.
For our complete packing list, see What to Pack for Thailand With Kids.
What Does 5 Days in Phuket Cost?
Phuket can be one of the more expensive parts of Thailand, particularly if you book multiple tours and family-friendly resorts.
Your biggest costs are usually:
Hotels
Boat trips
Activities
Food
Transport

Final Verdict: Is 5 Days in Phuket Enough?
For most families, yes. Five days gave us enough time to experience both North and South Phuket, enjoy some of the island's most famous activities and still build in time to relax.
The combination of these activities worked extremely well:
One island-hopping day
One villa relaxation day
One beach day
One adventure day
One flexible day
Most importantly, it never felt rushed. If I had one piece of advice, it would be this: don't feel pressured to fill every day with tours.
Some of our favourite memories weren't the headline attractions. They were the quieter moments. Swimming in our private villa pool, enjoying a floating lunch, watching the planes over Mai Khao Beach and spending time together without a strict schedule.
For us, Phuket was the perfect way to finish our Thailand family holiday and provided exactly the balance of adventure and relaxation we were looking for.
