Costa Rica had been on our family travel bucket list for years.

The promise of sloths, monkeys, volcanoes, waterfalls, rainforest adventures and beautiful beaches sounded incredible, but before booking we had lots of questions. Is Costa Rica good for kids? Is it safe? How expensive is it? How long do you need? And is it worth travelling there during the UK summer holidays?

After spending 10 days in Costa Rica with our 7-year-old son Joshua, exploring La Fortuna and the Pacific Coast, we came away convinced that it's one of the best family adventure destinations we've visited.

Costa Rica is one of the best family adventure destinations we've visited, but it's a little different from a typical beach holiday.

For first-time visitors, I'd recommend splitting your trip between La Fortuna and the Pacific Coast, as this gives you the best mix of adventure and relaxation.

Families should also be prepared for longer driving times than expected, warm and humid weather, occasional rain during the summer holidays and costs that are generally higher than many other destinations in Central America. The good news is that Costa Rica is easy to navigate, very family-friendly and packed with experiences children will remember long after the trip ends.

This is usually the first question parents ask before booking. For us, the answer was an easy yes.

Costa Rica offers a combination of rainforest, wildlife, waterfalls, volcanoes, hot springs and beaches that is difficult to find anywhere else. Rather than spending two weeks in a single resort, our trip felt like a genuine adventure while still giving us plenty of time to relax.

What makes Costa Rica particularly good for families is the variety. One day we were crossing the rainforest canopy at Mistico Hanging Bridges, the next we were swimming at La Fortuna Waterfall, and a few days later we were relaxing on the beach watching monkeys in the trees.

Visiting Costa Rica During the Summer Holidays

One of the biggest concerns we had before travelling was the weather.

The UK summer holidays fall during Costa Rica's rainy season, and many articles make it sound as though you'll spend your entire trip dodging thunderstorms. That wasn't our experience at all.

Most mornings were dry, warm and perfect for exploring. We completed all of the activities we'd planned, including Mistico Hanging Bridges, La Fortuna Waterfall and the hot springs, and often found the rainforest looked even more impressive after rain.

How Long Should Families Spend in Costa Rica?

This is one of the most common planning questions, and the answer depends on how much ground you want to cover.

For most first-time visitors, I think:

• 14 days allows you to add another destination or travel at a slower pace

For first-time visitors, I'd strongly recommend a combination of La Fortuna and the Pacific Coast.

If I had to recommend one inland destination in Costa Rica for families, it would be La Fortuna.

This is the area that delivers many of the experiences people imagine when they think of Costa Rica. Rainforest walks, waterfalls, volcano views, wildlife and hot springs are all packed into one relatively compact area, making it easy to explore with children.

For most families, I recommend a hotel with hot springs if your budget allows.

We stayed at Hotel Los Lagos, which gave us hot springs, waterslides, volcano views and easy access to the main attractions.

Is Driving in Costa Rica Difficult?

Before visiting, driving was one of my biggest concerns. In reality, it was much easier than expected.

Roads can be slower and more winding than in the UK, and journey times are often longer than the distance suggests, but having a hire car gave us much more flexibility.

Families who enjoy adventure, wildlife and being outdoors will get the most from Costa Rica. Those expecting an easy fly-and-flop beach holiday may prefer to spend more time on the coast or stay at an all-inclusive resort.

For us, the key to a successful trip was combining La Fortuna with a beach stay, allowing us to experience both sides of Costa Rica without trying to cram too much into one itinerary.

The good news is that Costa Rica is remarkably family-friendly. With the right itinerary, realistic expectations about travel times and a mixture of adventure and downtime, it's a destination that works exceptionally well for families with school-aged children.
